D20 Modern interview - Anthony Valterra

There's a few tid-bits in there. It looks like it should be good. I'm hoping it's comparable to Alternity, I really liked Alternity and I've been waiting for a set of D20 rules to run Alternity-like games.

From what I gathered in the interview it looks like the core book will focus more on contemporary games than sci-fi. Did you get the impression that the futur sci-fi rules were a certainty or a speculation on AV's part. I'd love to see something like that if it's not in the core book.

Definitive? I don't think it will be definitive, and I wouldn't see it as a great good. There are already some good modern/future d20 games, with their rules OGC too, and I wouldn't like seeing them die because of a new standard...

I think there is a real dearth of modern era d20 games out there. Anyone want to correct me and provide me with a list? I particularly like modern settings, but when I call to mind d20 products that feature this, the new Shadowchasers is all that comes to mind. I don't particularly like the rules system used by Palladium, but they have had a number of well done modern settings (Beyond the Supernatural, Systems Failure, TMNT, and Ninjas & Superspies). I think its about time WotC started picking up the slack.

Well leaghe as far as D20 modern/sci-fi games go we have D20 Fading Suns, Dragonstar and Malls and Morons that are available now. Things are still comming are D20 Traveller, D20 Farscape and D20 Call of Cthulu. There's probably more that I've missed too.

Hmm. I was looking specifically for modern games, not futuristic ones. Darwin's World is a nice d20 futuristic game. But modern games are a little tougher to find. I had forgotten about Malls & Morons (I hang my head in shame), but still - I think you'll agree that Malls and Morons falls into a very specific niche. Call of Cthulhu is a game I am eagerly awaiting just because it will be a contemporary setting. I'm not sure about Dragonstar, but all the others are definitely futuristic type games (I think Dragonstar is, too?)

So what does that leave me for specifically modern settings? Malls & Morons, and the new Shadowchasers. And I can look forward to Call of Cthulhu (and Shadowforce Archer, while I'm at it).

Horacio mentioned that there are a number of modern/futuristic settings already out there, not related to WotCs d20 Modern project. I think he is correct if he drops the 'modern' half, because the only modern game that meets that definition is Malls and Morons.

If there are some other d20 games set in a contemporay era, I'd appreciate being pointed in their direction.

You can download Spycraft Lite, a reasonably complete (minus GM section) preview of AEG's forthcoming Shaowforce Archer game HERE.

It is a modern / near future game of espionage and international adventure in the vein of the old Top Secret, SI. I am really impressed with the Spycraft Lite .pdf. I'm not so sure about the default setting which they have previewed on the website, but it shouldn't be too hard to just use the core rules and ignore the Psionic cyberninja and Mysic slayers.

A review of the lite rules can be found HERE.
