d20 Modern -- Stargate d20?

Tsyr, Stargate SG-1 is one of the reasons I am looking forward to D20 Modern. I love the show and what I have read of D20 Modern has me excited.

I am impressed by the Spycraft suggestions/conversions but Spycraft leaves me wanting. I like the idea behind D20 being a genre-less system. This gives me greater flexability for ideas like Stargate.

Can't wait 'til November.

Ditto, ditto. I vastly prefer the idea of D20 modern... as for the other suggestions... Dragonstar is not much better than normal DnD, really... Fading Suns might work; but I think too much of it would, like starcraft, have to be changed or removed... I don't have Deadlands d20, so I can't comment on that...

What did you think of my prototype jaffa template?

I am very impressed with what has been suggested here. I must say that it temps me to try a Spycraft SG-1 or maybe a little d20 Traveller or a d20 Deadlands/Lost Colony or Farscape or Dragonstar.

What I am trying to say is, I just want to play a little SG-1. :D

Spycraft SG-1

I can the need for a a few specialized feats for alien equipment/weapons, but Spycraft ought to be able to handle most of the other demands pretty well. As a field technician the Snoop is pretty solid (lots of skill points and good class skill spread for technology). Most of the specialized techie stuff would be feat based after that (using the existing skill feat trees in most cases). Depending on your skill load out Snoop, or even more likely, the Pointman class could fill the 'scientist' role. You could use versitility to get the skills you need, still have access to feats that would pump the desired skills, and have a back-up function in the party of providing assistance and some leadership without neccessarily making a combat monster. Spycraft Inspiration checks would blend in pretty smoothly for the "figure out alien junk" on the fly and the Pointman's serendipity class ability goes along with the "save the day with a weirde technological solution" idea with little or no modification.

What are some of the other challenges associated with addapting the setting?

Looks good, but want to throw in a few other things for consideration:
Positives:
- Regenerative ability: the symbiote gives the Jaffa accelerated natural healing: perhaps 2x or 3x the norm?

Negatives:
- Limited lifespan: the symbiote eventually matures and will no longer needthe Jaffa (don't have the timeframe offhand - 5 years, I think?)
- perhaps give Jaffa a -1 skill point gained/level, since they seem to be very specialized in the things they do

The only thing about the "Lost Technology Use" feat is that I don't think even the Jaffa knows how to the Stargate works, etc. Perhaps the feat can be more Goul'd related:

Goul'd Technology Proficiency: acts as a base requisite - allows the owner of the feat to apply their skills to the requistie technology, as well as taking Goul'd Technology related feats (for example, it would be a base requisite to: "Weapon Focus: Goul'd staff weapon")
Goul'd Weapon Proficiency: perhaps a separate feat, since some might just use the weaponry, but not necessarily be proficient in the technology (ie O'Neill)

This way, other "alien" technology can be applied:
Earth Technology Proficiency
Asgard Technology Proficiency
Ancients Technology Proficiency

Aliens or similar earth cultures with similar tech levels could perhaps be lumped into pre-existing technology proficiencies.

Or perhaps just have them ranked as a low, medium, high, and advanced technology proficiencies in order to be more broad, with specific feats that specialize in specific alien races/cultures.

Yeah, there's plenty of ways to go with this :)

My Spycraft books finally came in last week and I why people are saying it'll be tough to adapt Spycraft to Stargate SG-1. Alot of it seems to be how specific the abilities alot of the classes are, and it'll take ALOT of adaption, as well as things needing to be created from scratch. The d20 system's hero-type classes would easily answer the question "How do I create Daniel Jackson with these rules?"

It probably gets to the point where one might be gutting Spycraft almost in it's entirety and creating the product from scratch.

Still, it's alot of interesting things to think about :)

Stargate NOt D20 - Heresy?

I've been thinking about SGC RPG for a awhile. Though I'm quite keen on D20 for heroic fantasy, it really would not be my choose for any other genre. The whole concept of HP & AC while adequate for fantasy heroes does not fit with my ideas of contmeporary gun battles. Heroes in my adventures survive by avoiding damage - not by soaking up "hp"s.

My plan is to add a few military skills to Call of Cthulhu (the real one not d20). PC can be Military, Civilian specialists, Transplanted HUmans, or select allied aliens like Jaffa, Tok'ra, friendly Unas, or maybe even the being from the 5th Man episode.

Stargate could/should make a kick butt RPG. It's kind of surprising there is not more marketing done around the property.

Other sources for SGC d20

People have already mentioned John Tynes aborted d6 work and the official site, but has anyone had a look at Andy Slack's SG-13 GURPS stuff? http://homepage.ntlworld.com/andyslack/html/sg13.htm

There is some quite nice stuff intheer that could be canibalised for d20. My guess is that something like T20 would be a good basis (Prior Service rules and a new d20 damage system taht is scaleable from individual melee combat up to Starship weaponary) but it does depend on where you want to pitch it on the heroic vs gritty scale...

I'm thinking of going with CoC for Stargate as well (although d20 in my case), mess with the story a bit and turn it into a Mythos fueled romp into complete madness. Maybe start with Jackson or T'ulc returning through the gate complete insane and gibbering about things that should not be. The rest of SG-1 would of course have been munched by something with far too many tentacles and your team would be sent in to investigate... MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA™
