Well, you know, of the 1.3 million dollars Palladium allegedly lost in the scam, they accepted a plea bargain from the perpetrator for a paltry $47,080.00 (3.6% of the alleged loss).

I assume the other $1,252,920.00 was made up in sales by fans that heeded their call.

I think it's brilliant, and might do the same some day.

I don't know if the 1.3 million was an accurate figure. I think part of it might be inflated estimates for the comic/anime collectables the guy was supposed to have stolen.

Regardless, they claimed: "...betrayal of trust, theft, and embezzlement has inflicted what we estimate to be $850,000 to 1.3 million dollars in damages to Palladium. "

Even if the figure was just $850,000, that settlement of $47,080 is just 5% of that amount.

Regardless of how true or exaggerated the situation was, it's still a brilliant way of selling books.

I doubt we'll ever know what the true number for the theft was. Also, the low percentage of damages paid vs. damages alleged is as much to do with how much the defendant (I heard his father cut a check for close to his father's net worth) could afford to pay.

It may be a case of, "Mister Palladium, you can accept $47k from the defendant's father and end this all or you can seek damages, get a judgement of alot more, but never see a dime as the defendant is destitute."

Of all I read of this last year, the above seems like the most likely scenario.

This in no way should me construed as a defense of Palladium. Just relating what I read and divined from that.

Thanks,
Rich

I'd let Palladium sue me, personally, and have my lawyer drag the case out as long as humanly possible. What could possibly be the end result for Palladium, beyond me taking down the info?

What, on the other hand, might it cost THEM in court fees? My lawyer is VERY good, by the by, and a very close relative.

Heh - the last time I made a comment like that I think I was nine years old, and my father was my "personal" lawyer. :)
