d20: The Death of Roleplaying! (not really)

Maggan

Writer for CY_BORG, Forbidden Lands and Dragonbane
Hello all!

I'm writing a piece called "d20: The Death of Roleplaying?" for a national rpg mag (in Sweden), and I'm going to examine the claim that d20 would stifle competition and eventually lead to only d20 rpgs being produced.

So I need some help. What non-d20 rpgs have been released or rereleased since the release of d20 (in late 2000, I think it was)?

These comes to mind (at least to my mind):

Lord of the Rings - Decipher
Stormbringer - Chaosium
Nobilis 2nd Edition - Hogshead
Orkworld - Wicked Press (unsure about this one)
De Profundis - Hogshead
Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Eden Studios
Dying Earth - Pelgrane Press (unsure about this one)
Kult 3rd Edition - Seventh Circle
Little Fears - key 20 publishing

And that's it... but I know there have been many more releases and rereleases, so I would be grateful if anyone here could add to the list (game title and publisher)

Thanx for any help!

Cheers

Maggan

(and please, please, pretty please, keep to the subject of the thread. No system wars or d20 apocalypse theories in this thread. Please)

You might want to see if you can browse the review database at rpg.net by date posted, but I'm not sure you can.

Anyhow, I think you can add these to your list:

Arrowflight
Adventure!
Exalted
Danger Quest
the English edition of Agone

Dyine Earth

You are correct about Dying Earth. It was released in 2001.

Interestingly enough, I don't feel that D20 games are any competition for Dying Earth, as the games attract completely different kinds of players.

I say this with tremendous respect for both systems, and play both with enthusiasm (thus discrediting my claim, but I still thinks it's largely true).

Good luck with your research.

While not a new game, White Wolves storytell system is still alive and kicking. They still print new products and I know many people still play that game.

GoO put out a new edition of BESM, along with the non-d20 version of Silver Age Sentinals

Talislanta 4th Edition

Vampire: Victorian Era

Hackmaster

Decipher's new Star Trek game...

I'd have to check, but maybe JadeClaw...

HERO 5th Edition, right? I don't follow HERO, but I think that one is really recent...

Plus buckets of suplements for assorted game lines already out... DP9's stuff, WW's stuff, etc.

Orkworld was definately pre-d20.

Actually, just listing titles is a little specious. Many of the game mentioned had very small print runs.

I would count GURPS in there. While it is older it is still very much alive and well with new suppliments coming out all the time. Also Green Ronin has some none d20 systems (Mutants and Masterminds and the upcoming spaceship zero) which makes a great case considering that they are a d20 company. Green Ronin has also just purchased the rights to Dragon Fist from WotC and they are considering releasing it as a non d20 product as well.

Cheers

Which magazine, Maggan? -Codex? I hope I will catch it.

Also, Chi-Chian the RPG by Aetherco/Dreamcatcher Multimedia.

As for the comments about small print runs, I don't really think that matters too much. Keep in mind that print runs for third party companies happened ALL the time prior to the year 2000. Most companies except for White Wolf , SJG, and WotC/TSR had sub-10,000 copy print runs of their games. "Small Press" and "RPG" have gone hand-in-hand since Alarums and Excursions.
