d20STL alternative

So, what am I going to do if my game Fluffy Bunny: the RPG of Peaceful Love and Happiness is using similar trade dress to 3 games with something to offend everyone? How do I be sure that my game doesn't get lumped together with a bunch of games aimed at a totally different market in a way that hurts the future of my game? What safeguards do I have to prevent my brand being affected by other brands using the same logo if those brands are more controversial than my own?

It's not the specific examples that are important here. I'm just seeing a real downside to an alternate logo for anyone who is doing work that is less edgy than the edgiest work using the logo. Maybe that downside doesn't really exist, and I'm certainly open to someone proving that to me.

I don't see the problem. What you want is the d20 System Trademark License as recently revised - WotC seem to have turned it into the license you want it to be.

The idea of an alternate logo is not for you; it's for people who are looking for something else, something which doesn't have content restrictions. You're seeking something which does have content restrictions, and that thing already exists.

I love your idea!
Could both logos be used on the same product without violating any of their licenses?
If they could, doing this would make the OpenDice-logo more known without the fear of a reduced customer-base for most products(and giving good hope to thoose who only use the opendice).

I don't think the d20 logo has as much value as people think it does.

1. Most people look for specific brands and authors now. "Is this Sword&Sorcery?" "Is this Kalamar?" "Is it by Monte?" That sort of thing.

2. d20 lost a -lot- of value right out the door with a series of poorly made products, and it's only partially recovered that value due to the very brands people now seek rather than seeking the d20 logo itself.

I think that whatever Sword & Sorcery, Green Ronin, FFG, AEG, Malhavoc, and Mongoose go with will carry the market regardless of what it looks like.

Those are the -core 3rd party brands- as far as I know ( :D ). If they put out a new logo, it will be stronger than d20 fairly quickly. Not stronger than Dungeons and Dragons, but it could beat d20 easily.

Green Ronin already has an alternate logo that has appeared on a few of it's products:

This logo is shared by one other company at present that I've seen.

Interesting idea. Could this work and how? It reminds me of the various stars and emblems on the back of my ATM card.

Personally, I think it would be better to bludgeon WoTC thoroughly about the head and shoulders until they recant this assinine change to the d20 license.

Failing that, let's see how fast that new logo can be out on some products!

(by the way, just what is this Fatal d20 that has been mentioned in regards to this change???)

Don't ask. That game is so anathematic to me, I cannot bring myself to post a link. However, a search at www.google.com for "F.A.T.A.L." should bring you the results you need.

And I guess I've totally failed to communicate my concern.

Never mind; please pretend I never asked.

Have you even looked at what the content of BOEF is? or just read the press release and made assumptions? *suggests looking at the other thread were valtera has posted actual content previews*

also have you read the slayers guide to female gamers? because your post seems to indicate you dont know what its about. its actually a very funny and entertaining book and most of the people i know who have bought it are.... *drum roll* FEMALE!

lastly your right i dont see the point your trying to make about someone elses product being associated with yours.. why? because theyre a different company.

Personaly stores will carry what will sell. and frankly no store would carry some of the example titles you mentioned. thus the mass consumer would not be aware of them and your poduct would not be tainted. Even if they are aware of the product it means theyre fairly interested in d20 and would know your not the same company.

I was actually looking at these as recently as last week. Would you be so kind as to provide a link to the license for using the prometheus logo (if one exists)? I didn't find one on the site.

Still waiting on a response on this question. What are the terms for a publisher to actually USE the logo?
