Thanks for the tips. And I found out that the journal was named Star Wars Adventure Journal.

SWAJ was pretty cool. It had a lot of just straight-up SW fiction in it, as well as adventures and stats.

Imperial Sourcebook and Star Wars Sourcebook are, in my opinion, the two best books in the line.

There are parts that are very loosely derived from stuff in comics or novels,* but the vast majority of it is original. If you're looking for more info, this is a wikipage that I built for a Lords of the Expanse campaign set just after the Jedi Purge.

Web searches for "Tapani Sector" or "Shapani Bypass" will get you a lot of good info about the setting.

*The major points that are derived from other material are the Fondor and Mrlsst star systems. Fondor is a major Imperial shipyard that shows up in several comics and novels. Mrlsst is a planet full of parrot-like bird-men with a big university -- in one of the comics, it's the setting for the last stand of a fugitive Jedi (Taj Junak) against the Empire, who is mentioned in passing in the setting guide.

My personal favorites are Galaxy Guide 8: Scouts and Galaxy Guide 11: Criminal Organizations . I also liked what WEG did with the Lords of the Expanse setting.

Makes me wish I had some spare cash available... There's a lot of D6 SW stuff there that I don't have, and wouldn't mind owning.

If you're doing a homebrewed galaxy it may not fit but I really liked the books on different species (Galaxy Guides 4 and 12 and one big one that which I can't remember the title of). For running a game Wanted by Cracken could be pretty helpful. It had lots of villainous NPCs.
