Damage from falling trolls...er objects

Well, if you want to get all 3d about it, I suppose the players would get AoO's on the trolls, since the trolls would have moved out of a threatened square.

I wouldn't have the players suffer damage. I'd have the trolls make grapple checks, maybe, with a successful grapple knocking the player prone.

Technically, a Combat Reflexes using Spiked Chain Wielder could make 2 AoOs on the falling troll. :)

One for leaving a threatened area.
One for entering his space.

I think..

Well OK, the threatened area that the 9 foot tall 500 troll is leaving is about 30 ft up. The pc's are surrounded and these trolls are purposefully balling himself up to land on the pc's.

Falling objects?

Edit: Dont get me wrong, I'm not trying to be difficult or anything. Just clarifying to help come to a better conclusion. :)

See that's what I wasn't sure about - doesn't leaving a threatened space and entering an opponent's space count as 2 seperate opportunities?

I mean, had the troll landed next to you then it would have left 2 of your threatened squar..err cubes during its move, but definitely only have provoked one AoO, for exactly the reason you quoted.

The SRD has this to say on the matter:

Moving out of more than one square threatened by the same opponent in the same round doesn’t count as more than one opportunity for that opponent.

For extra fun, lets assume for the moment that "entering an opponent's square" is not subject to the restriction on movement based AoOs. Now, reverse the roles, and give the troll Awesome Blow, as well as Combat Reflexes and a half-decent dex.

I love this game :)

Well I don't think you can assume an instantaneous transition from 30' to ground level - I mean the troll has to move from its perch up there to the pc. (Although in this case by 'move' we mean 'fall') Under the RAW that will provoke AoOs as with any movement.

I don't know of any rule to cover this situation. Personally I'd give the troll a ranged touch attack (with a 50% miss chance as it's not looking where it's falling).

If it hits, the troll will take 3d6 falling damage, and based on the 500lb weight mentioned in the Monster Manual, the target will take 5d6 damage (3d6 + 1d6 per 200lb weight).

I'd also allow the AoO - if the character has a weapon ready they can jam it into the falling troll before they get squished.

I'm assuming that the leaving the threatened area won't be a factor since my players (I don't know about yours) don't have a 30' reach. :)

That sounds fair.

OK so now that we've resolved falling and damage where does the player go? where does the troll go? Since they can't occupy the same space?

Have I overstepped the bounds of the rules here?

They don't need one - the AoO will trigger for those with 10' reach when the troll is just over 5' above their head.
