D&D 5E Damage on a missed attack roll

When you choose this journey at 3rd level, your strikes are followed by magical ripples that echo your intent. Whenever you make a melee weapon attack against a creature and miss, you can cause the creature to take force damage equal to your Wisdom modifier.

When I read this I picture a rippling plane of force following/echoing the weapons path. This doesn't seem to me to be an unavoidable effect. What I would do with this is something like: If your attack misses by your proficiency bonus or less the shadow/echo of your attack causes the creature to take force damage equal to your wisdom modifier. You can choose not to do this damage.
