Damage Reduction (Evil) (Mantle of Faith)

EPRock

Slaughter McSlaughter
The Mantle of Faith for 76,000

Grants Damage Reduction 5/evil to the character wearing it.

Why would a good person buy an item that is vulnerable to their enemy. I can see demons/devils/angels having a vulnerability to the opposite end of the spectrum, but why would you purchase an item that does not do anything to protect you against what you are fighting?

Yep, this issue with v3.5 has been brought up several times before. It's kind of poorly thought out.

(...poof...) Just blows your mind, doesn't it?

I read this and thought, "Oh well, you see, someone would buy this because..."

And then, I couldn't finish.

That is weird.

The 5th level cleric Spell "Righteous Might" grants the same thing. Dr 5/evil to good clerics and 5/good to bad clerics!!!

Wierd I say

Yup, we have a non-written house rule that if DR comes *naturally*, then your "opposite" (Demons/angels, fire/water, etc) can bypass your DR. But if your DR is from a crafted source (e.g. a magic item), then you would want to make an item that "protects" you from your enemies.

So, good-aligned people would make magic items and cast spells that have ##/good DR, so that they would take less damage from sources other than good.

That isn't entirely true. Just because your opponents are evil, doesn't mean that they automatically overcome the damage resistance. The same is true if they have DR X/good. Just because you are good, doesn't mean you overcome the DR. Your neutral rogue can just as easily overcome the DR than the Good fighter. You just need to hand him a holy sword.

So, in order to overcome DR X/evil your opponent needs one of the following:
An unholy weapon
A Cleric to cast the Align weapon spell.
A natural weapon from an evil creature should also work I think.

It is easier to overcome the DR/good of your evil opponent because you have the same options PLUS the Bless weapon spell from the Paladin's spell list.

Most evil opponents I have come across in my campaigns have not carried around unholy weapons.

A little weird, but I like to think about it like this. The spell grants you damage resistance so you are better able to keep from being damaged. However since it is granted from a good source, any evil aligned weapon would specialize in fighting good and therefore overcome it. The same thing with DR/good. It is usually granted by an evil source and only good aligned weapons are specialized enough to get around it.

It would be more beneficial if it was the other way around because you would probably never see an orc carrying around a holy or good aligned weapon, but it makes sense to me the way it is.

It's still pretty darn good. It's not like there are loads of creatures and enies out there that can get through this DR. It's the poor dragons and other creature that have DR X/magic that have something useless.
