ok i have a 10th level fighter, 1st level ironbound dwarf. and he is almost the best thung since sliced bread in melee combat. although he doesnt do alot of damage per atack. i based him on the priciple that the best offense is a great defense, and it has worked out nicely, he has an armor class in the mid 40's currently and will reach the 50's in a few more levels. i take the stand that i will hit you more often then you will hit me. it may take some time but he will chop you down.,,the problem is magic users!!!! whether it be spellcasters or creatures who have spell like abilities, it sux. so my question to you guys is this, what can i do shorten the gap between me and magic users?

That's your problem-- you've got it backwards. The best defense is a good offense.

You need to increase your move speed and charge whatever looks like a spellcaster first. Try to get some boots of striding and springing, and the Power Lunge feat. With your armor class as high as it is, don't worry about the mage's fighter buddies knocking you for AoOs-- charge past them and hit the Mage as hard as you can for as much damage as you can.

You might also want to look into magic items that grant spell resistance.

Well, you are a dwarf. Gaps due to shortness are gonna happen. :)

Really, the issue is simple - nothing is perfect. By concentrating on this one type of defense, you leave yourself open in other areas. That's as it should be. No one character is supposed to be able to take anything and everything.

The simplest thing I could suggest is getting the magi into melee combat with you. It does become somewhat more difficult to cast spells when there's an axe in your face. Another would be to team up with a magic user of your own - fight fire with fire.

If you're fighting spellcasters of comparable level to yourself, then speed or range is of the essence; you need to be hitting them fast, and preferably from a good distance. Regardless of how you're hitting them, you need to be hitting them HARD, else you'll soon be an iron-slag dwarf. 11th level straight spellcasters all are throwing 5th and 6th level spells, and they're using solid direct-damage effects, so you need to not be where the fireballs are landing and you need to make sure they don't have any chance to get off a spell. Magical ranged weapons with several types of damage and readied attack actions are good because you're getting excellent amounts of damage each round, and keeping those Concentration checks for spellcasting up. Closing to melee with a spellcaster is dangerous, but if you can deal more damage in melee than ranged, it's the best option, because you can potentially keep him from casting spells.

Otherwise, start looking for one of two things --

A) Mantle of Spell Resistance
B) A nice hillside town to retire to and set up a forge

Pray that they don't cast Ghorus Toth's Metal Melt on your weapon.

Spell resistance, at 10th level is way too expensive: 10k for each point over 12, minimum 13 means that your maximum SR is 17, and then you do not have anything else.

Perhaps you should ask the party mage to cast something on you, like Spell Resistance, which grants 12 + level spell resistance iirc...

thnks for the suggestions...if anyone can think of anything else plase share.. i have a cloak of resistance +3...and spe;; resistance to expensive and week at this level a. a spell res of 17 would mean a comprable spellcaster in level to me would have to roll a 6...um not worth the money in my eyes....

Here's some basic stuff:

Get a Stone of Good Luck. +1 luck bonus to saves, ability checks and skill checks for 10k gp isn't bad. Upgrade that Cloak of Resistance as soon as possible. Maybe pick up the Iron Will and Lightning Reflexes feats. And have the party spellcaster(s) near you with a couple of prepared Dispel Magics.

Anything that would let you Fly would help. Gives you speed and manueverability on the battle field. Will help with anything you fight.

Boots of speed would help as well.

Haste then activate fly item and lay it on them. Use the partial action from haste to ready for him to run or 5 foot step and cast.

and both items would be useful else where as well.

Think potions as well.

Cheap and useful when you need them.
