Yeah, I forgot to mention Mikko (shrine maidens) work with kannushi, but are really more healers, spiritual mediums and exorcists, while kannushi do all the other aspects of cleric work. While Japan is very refined, even in its animistic beliefs, I think aspects of Shinto is very close to other Asian animistic worship and a good micro-cosm of that to reflect upon in similar spirit-based cultures elsewhere in Asia. Of course S.E. Asia has more snakes and naga, than Japanese mythos.
