Cool, thanks for the suggestions. I'm still not sure what got him into adventuring, perhaps it would be one of the few fields in which his skills would also be applicable, and he has to eat somehow.

Well, Athas is a harsh world with horrid living conditions and death is commonplace. Pretty much every character is a survivor in one form or another, in that they do what they must to survive.

Perhaps as a Rogue/Soulknife/Duelist to be, you are the quintessential hustler. Rahter than stay in one arena and fight for championships, you wander, seeking other arenas and humiliating their champions for fun and profit. Rogue would give you your hopping around stuff, while Soulknife guarantees you won't ever be without a weapon (except possibly in anti-psionic areas, if they even exist). Now, really mess people up and be a Halfling. They're not your typical live-in-the-burrows-and-smoke-pipeweed variety in Athas; they're bloodthirsty and savage (and perhaps even cannibalistic?) killers.

Ah, my pet peeve!

Athasian halflings never eat other halflings. Well, there's one NPC in one of the adventures who did, but it was considered the most heinous crime imaginable, so they exiled him (they don't like to kill other halflings either, not even of different tribes). Now, they do eat humans, elves, dwarves, etc., but that doesn't make them any more cannibals than a shark eating a human is.
