Dark sun question

First Post
I recently picked up the revised 2e dark sun boxed set from ebay, and a friend at work who played a long time ago says that there are two boxed sets you need aside from all the other adventure box sets. I think he is confusing the original set with the revised, but he insists that I need both. Anyone know for sure?

The only stuff you need is one of the Dark Sun box sets, the 2e D&D rules, and some 2e psionics rules. Some of the box sets are neat, but hardly required. The Dark Sun monster collections and the softcover supplements would probably be much more useful to the DM (Dune Trader, Slave Tribes?, the elemental priest book, etc.).

Any campaign setting boxed set you get, that has all the parts, will be complete needing only the "core rules" for that edition. Just make sure it IS a "campaign setting", not something that is just a giant boxed adventure like say Ivory Triangle. Good luck.

You specifically need the un-revised box set. It's from before TSR meta-plotted away most of the awesome. The revised one explains what the setting in the first boxed set would be like if NPCs did all the fun stuff in it.

Yes Dark Sun fans tend to be split pretty solidly into 2 camps: original box set or revised. The original is where I plant myself and I'm glad that the 4E take on things is more in line with it. Note, I said they are solidly split, not evenly :)

Ok, but what I need to find out is do I need to have the original to play. Up til now it seemed as though I don't but some are saying I do. The original box sets are pretty pricey, even on ebay, and I'm not buying it if I can play with the revised set I already have. I'm not so much concerned with which is better. I'm willing to make do in this situation.

You'd be fine just using the revised box set. It looks like it doesn't have game mechanics for playing a templar, but otherwise it's got everything in the original boxed set. It also has a lot more information about the setting than the orignal boxed set. If you want the original setting I'd guess the 4E DS campaign book would be the best way to get it.

The Ivory Triangle campaign expansion box is much more than just an adventure...
The Ivory Triangle

Perhaps you meant the Dragon's Crown boxed set...
Dragon's Crown

City by the Silt Sea is also a great boxed campaign expansion, and I also highly recommend the accessories, especially Slave Tribes, Dune Trader, Veiled Alliance, City-State of Tyr, Elves of Athas, Thri-Kreen of Athas, and Windriders of the Jagged Cliffs.

Here's a list of all the 2e Dark Sun products on the TSR Archive: TSR Dungeons & Dragons Archive: Dark Sun
