I think you will find that 10' per square is way too detailed. I have always used 40' per square (I don't remember why, but it works for me!). The scale is big enough to show some detail (trees can take up most of a square if they are big), a little hut can be 1/2 a square or even less, but still big buildings are not going to be more than 2 or possibly 3 squares in any direction.

Remember that you don't have to know who or what lives in each and every building. Leave yourself room to be flexible. If you have time, go online and do a search for the Perry-Castaneda map collection. They have really wonderful maps from the 16-19th centuries of countries, cities, regions, etc... that will help you "see" what real towns before automobiles looked like.
