So, the campaign I'm running has reached the critical point where it is on autopilot plot wise allowing me to concentrate more on atmosphere and the like. So, I have some ideas... I really want to make it a lot darker mood wise.
Just as some background, the PCs are ( mostly ) good and neutral who, thru twists and turns and the like are working with an Arch-Devil ( fallen celestial type ) battling against the complete resurrection of a Demon Prince imprisoned in the world. Thru a series of screw ups, the party allowed the Demon Prince to become mostly reconstituted and is lacking only one final piece before becoming fully free ( he is able to wander the world, but he cannot leave it really ).
Anyway, with said Demon Prince's ascendancy, his power has grown as well. What I originally thought was, you know, wouldn't it be cool if every time one of the PCs spoke his name he knew it and knew where they were, and sent a balor or Marilith after them? Should I slowly ramp things up? Maybe a small retriever or something the first few times they say it until they catch on, and then hit them with the heavy stuff after they figure it out? This is kinda fair, but one thing I can't stand is enemies who behave stupidly, and this particular enemy is not stupid. If he knows where the PCs are, he will do his utmost to destroy them... ideas?
Anyway, what other ideas do ya'll have to make things darker? With the power of said demon and his allies growing, many of the Gods ( they are pretty weak compared to other world's gods ) have been either cowed into non-action or are actively supporting him. The land is covered with black snow that has the same impact as the desecrate spell. It also leaches the color out of buildings and kills off livestock and the careless thru prolonged exposure to negative energy. The clouds are always black blotting out the sun, so between the black snow and the black clouds, at midday the light is at best faint.
More flavor ideas?
