I will be attending the memorial service on April 20. If anyone wishes me to pass on thoughts, comments, or the like, feel free to contact me at curmudgeon dot gamer on gmail. I am also trying to arrange a gathering and a toast to Dave at a pub to be named later. Anyone local who is interested, or has suggestions, let me know.

Oh, if you do send me email, please label it as ARNESON to make it easy to find.

I have often thought it odd that Arneson did not get nearly as much credit with respect to D&D as did Gary. However, it does not suprise me much I suppose.

Putting this into terms of the cool and awesome crime of arson:
Dave Arneson lit a candle.
Gary Gygax used tht candle set off the equivalent of the semi-annual california wild fires.

Putting this into terms of being a parent:
Gary Gygax is the 'mother' that was pregnant with the child of D&D.
Dave Arneson is the 'father'.

In terms of space travel:
Dave Arneson was Werner Von Braun, who invented modern rocket science.
Gary Gygax used the rocket to walk on the moon.

In terms of automobiles:
Dave Arneson was the first guy to put a motor on a wagon and provide a means of controling it, inventing the first car.
Gary Gygax is like Ford, who mass produced the car and made them wildly available.

Gary deserves a great deal of credit, his accomplishments are very well known and very public. Dave Arneson also deserves a great deal of credit, but his accomplishments are typically less well known, though no less important.

END COMMUNICATION

Mr. Arneson,

Thank you sir, for 25+ years of an enjoyable hobby. Thank you for the friends I've made and the fun I've had. There are few people who can say that they created a new form of entertainment, one that has reached from games to novels to video games, tv shows, movies and more. Thank you.

Rest in peace.

I am sorry to hear of your passing!
Thanks so much for all the fun you have given me and my friends over the years.
May you rest easy, and my condolences go out to your family,

Sad, this time for real. :(

Please help me keep an eye on his Wikipedia article. When Gary died, some newspapers were lifting bits from his Wikipedia article, and in some cases quite liberally; last thing we want is misinformation spread that way.

(Note; the article is temporarily protected from new and unregistered users, so you would have to be established, or find someone like me who is.)

Thanks to anyone who may have been helping keep an eye on this. The article is no longer protected (anyone can edit), and most obits have probably been written. Feel free to see what's there, and help build up the "Awards and honors" section. I am making this one the next in my D&D "Good Article" drive, as a tribute to Dave, as I did previously with Gary.
