Daylight Pellets (MIC pg 156) - Question

Harmon

First Post
I am all about toys in game, arrows of all kinds for my archer, a cane made of Darkwood for my wizard, etc. When the Magic Item Compenduim came out I leafed through, found things I liked and noted them, but when I found this I was confused.

Cost - 150 gp
A Daylight Pellet can be thrown up to 50', when it lands it shatters and creates illumination equivalant to a daylight spell but with a duration of 10 rounds. These small stones are usually found in pouches containing 3d4 pellets. Using a pellet destroys it.

One pellet costs 150 gp? Or, a pouch of 3d4? A potion should only cost CL x 3 x 50 = 150 x 5 (min CL for a wiz), puts that at 750 gp, and it lasts 50 minutes. Am I missing something? Why purchase these things at that cost? Cause Daylight effects some creatures (Drow, Orcs, etc) in a detrimental way?

The movie, where Willow had the exploding magic pellets whose effects I can't remember.

I wish I could contribute better to the question. I'd guess it's 150/pellet, otherwise paying for a random number of pellets would suck.

Emm- don't recall that, course I saw the movie once, when it first came out, so....

Well that does help. Thanks.

I think it's 150/pellet, and I think the higher price is because you can throw them 50 feet and target something with them.

I'd go with 150gp each. I suspect there are a lot of items that are priced by usefulness/value when the formula price adds up to something that doesn't make sense. In this case it could be compared to a continual flame (stone) at 50gp. There is a little advantage of having the 'stone' light up once it reaches the target as opposed to when you take it out of the bag, and larger light radius (I think), and higher level spell for countering effects. In this cast the 150gp makes more sense than 750.

... Is that from Willow?

For the record, Willow's pellets were actually acorns that had the power of turning the target into stone.

And Bavmorda probably has SR, as she was able to shrug the effects off but looks like she would have a crappy fort save.

Regarding the pellet, 150gp each sounds about right. It would be nice if they followed standard range increment rules (or could be used in a sling), but watcha gonna do?
