DDI, 6 months later: changing my mind

Because of all the negative publicity about DDI early on, I wasn't going to invest in DDI. But, I have to admit, the ability to copy/paste monster stats would be really really helpful...

I'll take a second look at what's offered.

My main concern is that I want to buy something I'll use. I have enough D&D stuff accumulated over the years that I don't use, I don't want to spend anymore money on stuff I don't use.

Edit: Okay, I just checked out the cost of DDI. And I have to admit, it's really difficult to argue against spending $4.95/mo for a year for the current available features--especially since I'm a DM and am always looking for quicker ways to design adventures.

I definitely encourage people to post more feedback here, because I am now intrigued with DDI...

First of all, I wanted to say how refreshing it is to see a post like this. Amid all the entrenched battle lines of the edition wars, it's really nice to see somebody say, "Turns out I like this a lot more than I ever thought I would."

Second of all, I'm right there with you. I had little to no interest in the DDI just 2 or 3 months ago. Then I saw the character builder and I was pretty impressed. I asked my wife to get me a subscription for Christmas and every time I mess with it I seem to find some other nifty feature that makes it a good investment.

I was orginally skeptical of DDI...

But I really wanted to see the druid and the invoker, so I subscribed for a short period.

After now seeing how easy it is to print monsters, I'm never going back.

I was skeptical about DDI at first, based on some of Wizard's past digital efforts, but the couple months of free Dungeon and Dragon pretty much sold me just for that. I put in a 3 month subscription order shortly after it came out to give it a trial and see if they had any intention to stick to schedules and the like. It's indispensable now. Copy/paste from the very searchable Compendium, the Character Builder (which is set to go in full release by the end of the month), the continued high quality of Dungeon and Dragon, about any one of these would be worth $5 a month and I re-upped for a year, despite the hoops you have to go through to do so right now.

As a small aside, their timing is matching mine quite well. My group is lvl 3, about halfway through the level. It will be three or four more sessions before they hit level 4 and by then, if they stay on schedule, the full release of the builder will be out and we won't skip a beat.

I'm only saying this to you guys, and not to WotC, but they could charge more than they do and I would happily pay.

If the encounter builder printed out monster stat blocks for each encounter, then it would be a great product made even better. I would use it to stat up all my encounters.

Now, if the encounter builder let you dial monster level up or down, turn normal monsters into elites and solos, and handled all monster costumization needs ... that would send it into the stratosphere.
I agree - Character Visualizer? I want the monster builder/modifier a lot more! ;)

(Okay, I would still prefer the Game Table, but...)

I think I will mark this day on my calendar with "Some people on the Internet admitted that they were wrong about something".

I guess there is a first for everything... ;)

I didn't know the encounter builder was so useful, and I'm a subscriber! The "hidden button" is a life saver, great and thanks!

I like DDI, even if a most aprpeciated issue would be the functionality to click on each encounter map in Dungeon and see it magically printed in perfect game tile scale.

With electonic version this simply screams to be done.

Unless there's another hidden button or option I didn't notice :)
