I am *guessing* that if you lock in a year now... then you get a year's access no matter what else changes or gets added? However if you go the other routes you may get a surprise in a billing cycle or two, especially as new items do come online. I can sort of see the yearly thing, but the other two don't seem so appealing to me.
Could be. Or they could mean "short-term" in the standard business sense of "one year or less", and "long-term" as is "more than one year". They might mean they will offer subscriptions for more than one year, resulting in an even lower monthly rate.

Gotta admit, their hitting a price point i could get chase after (5 bux a month for dungeons and dragons by the year? its tempting)

I'm with you. Despite a decent salary, committing to nearly $20 every month is hard to swallow. Especially when I'm lucky to play once a month.

That said, I've really liked the articles I've seen so far, and could handle $5

As this reads, and it may just read funny, it seems this is quite possibly a "limited time offer, buy it while it is hot!" kind of thing. I suspect they will raise the price when they roll out more stuff beyond what's prsently promised. However, things being what they are, I don't think that'll happen in a year's time. Which is only fair: you're paying more because you're getting more. It is common practice however that you will be notified (hopefully your SPAM folder doesn't screen the notice) before there's any change in price.

Pretty reasonable pricing; I hope they don't jack it up too much if/when the other apps get finished. I'm still not sure I'll bite, as I'm not in a game right now, but I'm certainly entertaining the thought. I'm look forward to the reports people bring back from GenCon regarding the player apps.

And on another note... shouldn't a DDI account gradually appreciate in value? It seems like you'd have access to an increasingly large library of Dungeon and Dragon magazine PDFs. It kind of makes me wonder if I wouldn't be better off sitting on my hands for a few months, then subscribing for 1 month and making local copies of the PDFs.

Wow, yeah, that's worth the price of the mags alone. Which is a good thing, as that's all I'm really interested in.

Well worth it for the magazines alone.

Hopefully, if they decide to jack the price up later for additional content (IE, all the other stuff they've been promising), they'll still offer this as an option for folks who want the magazines only. Seems reasonable to me, anyway... keep a lot of customers that way who might bolt if they have to pay more because they get access to other features they don't want.
