DDXP and my thoughts on New Edition

Decided to start a new thread based on a conversation started in another.

I have had a lot of fun playing the new edition so far. Gave me a very old school feeling and I've been playing for a really long time now (this year makes 30). I played a fighter named Thud. I hit things with a large flail and they went splat. Very satisfying LOL. They are really excited about what they are doing and that is very contagious. They want to make the best game possible and they really do want your input.

I had a lot of talks with them about their goal of taking the best of every edition and making a balanced finished project and was fairly happy with the answers I got (it being a very raw and unfinished product makes solid answers hard at this point obviously). It's a fine line to walk as we all know balance is a tricky thing to nail down for a group of a few tens of thousands.

I encourage anybody who really loves D&D to get involved in the playtest (come on were geeks - we love getting stuff early). I'm in the Friends and Family playtest right now myself. I've just gotten the okay to get my local group back together to start further outside playtesting (so ya if you know me and live around Akron I guess you're lucky or unlucky as the case may be). That has me really excited right now.

I encourage those that can to make it to D&D Experience (Baldman Games - DDXP Front Page) in a few weeks as well. You will have no better opportunity to actually talk to the team working on this project then this show. How cool would it be to sit down at a table run my Monte or Mearls and actually see the new game and talk to them while you do it? 4 hours of playing with Monte for $8 ? A steal (not that I guarantee everybody who shows up gets to play with Monte - he is only one guy after all).

Thanks for the comments, but obviously we all want to hear more..

I'll start vague: you said it had a very old school feeling, could you qualify that statement?

Everybody wants to hear more. Heck I'm in that camp as well. Not my job description to spill beans though. I will say my Fighter was +X to hit, rolled dice a lot (dice gods were good to me), and I had a lot of fun with friends. Having fun makes everything else kinda a moot point to me.

Qualifying a feeling is like trying to burp into a hurricane. Kinda pointless. What gives me an old school feeling could give somebody else gas. My character felt like he was exactly where he should be for the level he was and the challenges he faced. It just clicked.

Dave,

I'm up in Cleveland... so maybe I'll just swing by your next session...lol :-D

But I will, for sure, be hitting up DDXP. I normally don't go, as I'm not big into the RPGA. But the combination of new edition, seminars, games ran by WOTC folks that I want to ask questions of, and a couple of old school 1E module games (that I've never had the opportunity to play) made me sign up just this week.
