While I was at Gen Con, I got the opportunity to chat with a couple members of the Paizo staff about the future of the Pathfinder brand.
With the final book of the Pathfinder Remaster Edition being released at Gen Con, I met up with Luis Loza, Creative Director of Pathfinder, to discuss what the reception has been like and what we can look forward to in the future.
Dawn Dalton (DD): How did the push to bring the Remaster forward change how Paizo worked to get all of the other books out?
Luiz Losza (LL): It was hectic. There was a lot to do out of the blue. Obviously, we weren’t planning to do this update and suddenly it was thrown onto our laps. There were herculean efforts from key members of the staff. Logan Bonner went through all of the rule books to see what we could keep, wanted to keep, and wanted to update and add on to. All of this was going on while we were trying to still have all of these other books going on without pulling the breaks completely on production. The editing team and the art team effectively had to pull double duty with the addition of four books onto the schedule that didn’t have space for new books at all.
DD: Tell me about War of the Immortals.
LL: The timeline can be a little confusing. There is a current event going on across our product lines called Godsrain. The event is precipitated by the death of a god, Gorum, the God of War. Instead of his death bringing the end to war, it unleashed war everywhere. It’s like breaking off the spigot off the side of a house. War of Immortals is one of the books that focuses on the Godsrain event. It features two new classes: the animist and the exemplar. These are the first classes built solely in the Remaster Edition. In addition to new character options, this book will also showcase how the world is reacting to the event.
DD: What brought you back to doing fiction books?
LL: With something so big as the death of a god, we saw this as a really good opportunity to dive into the world again from every single angle. This is an event we want to explore as much as we can. We don’t want it to just be a one and done. We want it to have a huge footprint and ramifications for the setting for years to come. It allowed us to have our Iconics explore the ramifications in a way they haven’t had before. It felt like the right time. The iron was hot because we were heating it up and getting ready to strike.
DD: Is there anything you are excited about for this next year?
LL: We just wrapped up our playtest for our two classes after War of the Immortals: the commander and the guardian. The book that will be featuring them will be called Battle Cry.
I want to extend a huge thank you to the staff at Paizo for giving me their time during a very busy weekend to talk about everything and to share in their excitement for the new products!
