Shortly after it was first announced that the print versions of Dungeon and Dragon would cease publication, there was talk that several efforts were underway to start new print magazines dedicated to tabletop RPGs. have any of those efforts progressed beyond the talk stage?

I send out a weekly single-sheet zine called Iridia. It's also available online in .pdf. The folks who receive the print version say that it's nice to get something in their mail box other than bills.

Although we may see a print rpg magazine, I doubt it will be a viable project. There have been many, many magazines that have come and gone. It's soooo expensive to publish. Dragon was freakish in its ability to survive.

I saw one called Polymancer on the shelves not too long ago, and while it seemed a little simple at points, I thought it looked like it had promise.

Mind you, that was months ago.

Polymancer continues to be published. It is available in Canada in most Indigo bookstores (that's our Barnes and Noble).

Polymancer has been increasing in pages and advertising. Not sure if they will be able to up the ante more, but I guess already having distribution in one country, they are able to give it a try as much as anybody.

It's not a great mag mind you - but it's not bad.

Wolfgang Baur has Kobold Quarterly (whose 2nd issue isn't too far off).

It's actually a PDF magazine primarily, but there are a limited number of print issues available. You can even get a subscription to print magazine.

I will be publishing Adventure Games Journal, a bi-monthly print magazine dedicated to role-playing games.

The first issue will be all Castles & Crusades and Wilderlands of High Adventure, and that will remain the core focus of the magazine, i.e., at least half of every issue will be focused on C&C and WoHA. We will begin coverage of other RPGs starting with issue #2; I am in the process of clearing things with other publishers, so an announcement about which other games will be covered is still down the road.

Some of these other games may be v3.5 games; others will be non-d20.

I plan some coverage of 4E, provided the OGL or whatever licensing agreement is developed would allow such. But 4E will definitely NOT be a focus of the magazine; it will be just one of the other games we cover.

The MSRP is high ($12), but that is because the rate is based on *zero* paid advertising, which is what causes no end of grief in publishing. Advertising is down across the board in all forms of print, and RPG advertising is dead. So in order to develop a viable business plan, I based sales on *no* advertising.

The first issue will be 48 pages, and as there are only two ads (one for our subscription, one for our other products), tghe cover, a ToC, and the OGL/licenses page... that's a full 43 pages of articles.

Also, the subscription rate (varies depending on the length of the subscription) is similar to the classic Judges Guild Guildmembership. Every issue the subscriber also gets a 32-page Campaign Installment, which to begin with will focus on the Wilderlands of High Adventure. Subscribers also get special goodies that are not generally available for sale otherwise.

Anyhoo, I've shilled enough here. Click here to find out more about Adventure Games Journal.
