Deadlands - My Own Thread

Ok, so I have been posting a LOT on someone else's thread for Deadlands and Earthdawn and feeling a little like I am threadjacking...so, I thought I would start my own thread :)

I have gone and bought the books and the Savage Worlds Explorer's Edition from Pinnacle Entertainment. Well I also bought some adventures too. Cost a lot living own in Australia...over $80 postage too :(

So has anyone had Xp with some of the adventures written for Deadlands? Does anyone have a campaign blog? Could anyone recommend a great introductory adventure? (We are going to play a few one-offs at this stage, rather than start another campaign - we are currently playing Dnd..and sometimes Star Wars).

I have been inspired by Deadwood series and I love Dead Man, but a lot of old westerns just don't grab me (esp the filmakers take on native Americans). I have a copy of Jonah Hex, but haven't watched it yet (even though what I have heard wasn't positive). I DO like shows like Tombstone. Are there any other movies I should watch before embarking on something like this?

Most importantly though, I would love to hear about other people's Deadlands campaigns. Cheers, C.

Are there any other movies I should watch before embarking on something like this?

Things to watch:

Wild Wild West: both the old TV series and the movie. Yes, I know many folks think the movie is crap, but some of the look and feel is there regardless.

Unforgiven: movie with Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman. Darned good western stuff.

Any of the Clint Eastwood "spaghetti westerns", honestly, would also be a good source: "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly", "IFstful of Dollars", "For a Few Dollars More"

Things to watch:

What he said. All good ideas, but I'd add in Tombstone starring Kurt Russel and Val Kilmer.

As for introductory adventures, Pinnacle has a host of short "One Sheet" adventures that are good for getting a feel for the setting.

One Sheets

Also remember, not every adventure in Deadlands needs to feature weirdness. You can have good old fashioned rootin' tootin' western fun, and it works perfectly.

Thanks guys. I have Tombstone. Definitely need Unforgiven, and yes I watched Wild Wild West a long time ago and hated it, but also came to the same conclusion as you Umbran - I need to see it again. Oh, and I unashamedly actually like the 2 Young Guns shows..."Best $1.80 I ever spent Bob".

AngryMojo: I have all the Onesheets - they look great. I also have bought sev adventures on PDF from Pinnacle. What I am after is whether someone has played any of these. I am really chasing some specific info re peoples experiences of Deadlands, but there doesn't seem to be a lot out there.

Also wondering how people go for prepainted minis. I have found 2 sets from Castle ? (something) and they look good, but appear to be going out of 'print'. I do NOT want to use counters or folded cardboard - so any other ideas? (Otherwise I will use a mixture of Star Wars and DnD minis).

Pinnacle have a HEAP of stuff on their site! I have dowloaded heaps. In fact I just printed the Test Drive rules and am thinking of trying them out (even by converting our dnd PCs for a one-off) before the long wait for our books to arrive (we have to wait for the Marshal's HB printing and then for the books to reach Australia).

Thanks heaps Matthew. I just read "Don't Drink the Water" last night and was thinking the same. The only thing is it doesn't state what rank it is best for (and I haven't played yet, so it is hard to go with gut). Would the novice pregens be fine with this? (The pregens are novice/starting WDs aren't they)? It appeared fine from what I can see...

I will take a look at your journal, though I am not familiar with the adventure.

Those are the only prepainted minis I have seen too :(

Speaking of images...Is there a good site that has gathered some of Deadlands or Weird West images? I could hardly find any pictures by googling :(

Considering the opening by Bruce Campbell I have in my copy of Deadlands (pre-SW), you might want to check out The Adventures of Brisco County, JR. After having watched some of the episodes, it appears that this series was an inspiration for some of the Deadlands.

Other movies to check out:

Magnificent Seven (both this and Fistful of Dollars are based on Japanese films by Akiro Kurosawa, actually - Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, respectively; both the westerns and japanese films are a good watch and it opens up a lot of story ideas if you think of gunslingers as a sort of samurai and the old west as being based off feudal japan)

Little Big Man w/ Dennis Hoffman

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid w/ Paul Newman & Robert Redford.

As an aside, I've been running a Deadlands game on Tuesdays, though I've been using my own adventure ("The Bravo Killin's"). Unfortunately, though I loved it when I wrote it (for the original Deadlands game), I'm finding it's a bit tame and railroady - I'm having to make some adjustments on the fly to spruce it up. If you're interested, shoot me an e-mail and I'll send you a copy, or I can try and give you a summary here.

Thanks Stormonu. I would really like to see your adventure AFTER you run it, and more importantly how it went, etc.

Finding adventures is not the problem. I have quite a few. I am more trying to find out what people have run, how it went, what did they change, was it a god beginners adv, etc.

I think running my own adventure before using any of the published adventures may have been a mistake for me (but enthusiasm runs high...). I'd be curious too to see what others suggest for starting out adventures.

And where can I find Don't Drink the Water?

Along with a lot of free one-sheet adventures on the Pinnacle home page (see the sig of Cutter above).

They have a few adventures for quite cheap in PDF. "Don't Drink the Water" will most likely be my first adv (if it is for novices) along with a 'journey enc' or two from 'Saddle Sore' OR the one-sheets.

Cheers, C
