Can someone give me a hand on understanding the standard dog (MM pg. 271)?
The dog has a Str of 13 (mod +1), a Wis of 12 (mod +1), a +4 racial bonus on Jump checks, and Alertness. It has Jump +7, Listen +5, and Spot +5.
This suggests the following skill ranks:
Jump 2 ranks (2 ranks + Str mod 1 + racial bonus 4 = 7)
Listen 2 ranks (2 ranks + Wis mod 1 + 2 for Alertness = 5)
Spot 2 ranks (2 ranks + Wis mod 1 + 2 for Alertness = 5)
That's 6 ranks total. But the dog has an Int of 2 (mod -4), hence 1 rank per Hit Die (2 + Int mod, min 1), quadruple for the first Hit Die. And it's a 1-HD creature. Thus only 4 ranks total.
Did I do something wrong, or did WotC?
Writing this, I thought of the following possibility: they're using Dex for Jump rather than Str. This is explicit for cats, but not mentioned for dogs. Any opinions?
