Deep Red

June 21
It's been three days since EROS moved. In fact, the vehicle's energy signature has become very faint. My instruments don't have the ability to give me a visual on the site; at this point, all I can do is pinpoint the vehicle's fading signature. I realize that it's entirely possible that the team has entered some subterranean passage and not returned to EROS. Still, an energy signature emitting from EROS tells me that the vehicle's engine is ON, which leads me to ominous thoughts. Was EROS stopped in its tracks the way all of my rovers were? What of the team? Did they somehow lose the ability to communicate off-planet? I know they told me that they would not need to communicate with Deep Red, but I have to believe there's some sort of emergency contingency in place. Not that I could do a whole lot, but at least I have the means to communicate with Luna or Earth.

There it is, on my map. Calaveras Mons. Staring at me. Mocking me. I can only wonder what secrets it holds. What keeps happening down there? It occurred to me that perhaps that southern slope is the site of some sort of electromagnetic interference. After some thought, however, I have to believe that the signals Lloyd and I received likely would not have penetrated such a field. A mystery indeed.

Rusty called in. He wanted to know how I was holding up. NASA had analyzed the second Martian transmission and had come up with some interesting theories regarding its purpose. All Rusty could tell me was that NASA now believes that the second transmission is unrelated to the first and that they could even have come from different sources or possibly different civilizations.

This just gets more interesting and confusing by the day. Perhaps NASA will someday see fit to let ME in on some of this information. Before it's too late.

I must be going insane.

As I sat down to record this log entry, something flew from Mars' atmosphere. It wasn't EROS; that was my first thought. No, according to my instruments, the survey vehicle hasn't moved. This thing, whatever it was... it had... wings. Feathered wings. Angelic wings. I couldn't really get a fix on it, even with the advanced sensors Deep Red has in spades.

Lloyd must not have seen it. Otherwise, I expect he would have contacted me. He looks for any excuse to call Deep Red. Must be as lonely as I am.

Maybe I am going insane.

It's been nearly a week since I've heard from Earth. I'm starting to wonder if I've been cut off. I don't know why Houston would purposely cut me out of the loop, but, given NASA's silence on their translations of the Martian transmissions I've sent them, I have to speculate that something is indeed going on. I hate to be a conspiracy nut, but this all smacks of some sort of cover-up.

Maybe this is the isolation and loneliness talking. I don't know. Earth seems so very far away right now. NASA spent considerable time and resources to train me for this assignment. One year away from Earth. One year mostly, if not entirely, alone. NASA never planned for the team that's now planetside to meet me here. Deep Red was going to be an unmanned station. That was the plan. I would be stationed here for a year and then go home.

But that one year has mostly come and gone and I see no signs that NASA plans to bring me back home. And now I've been cut off. Again, I have to wonder why.

Speaking of the inexplicable, the EROS still hasn't moved from the spot where it stopped about a week ago. No energy signature, no signals, no communication. I know the team wasn't supposed to be communicating with me, but still... I figured they would say something if they were in trouble.

Come to think of it, Lloyd hasn't called since the 18th, either. No communication from anyone for a week. No wonder I'm going nuts.

I'm almost out of stim. Now what?

On a whim, I started pinging Attenborough Station. If Lloyd wondered why, I figured I would tell him it was some sort of system error. I don't want Lloyd to know how lonely I'm becoming. Maybe it's some sort of competition completely in my head. But, nothing came of it. No response. That is strange and a little disconcerting. Attenborough's autonomic functions should have responded to my pings.

I trained Deep Red's array in the direction of Attenborough Station. The station is physically in the same place, in geosynchonous orbit above Mars, about 150,000m from Deep Red. I can't quite see Attenborough from here, but my sensors can still detect it. Deep Red has virtually the same systems as Attenborough and it should auto-respond, but nothing. I'm also seeing no energy signature from Attenborough. Did it shut down? Did Lloyd leave? I would think he would have said something. Maybe his government prevented him from communicating with me. Maybe London and NASA are conspiring to keep me in a sphere of silence.

I sent a test message to Houston, hoping Rusty would somehow respond. Nothing. At this point, not surprising.

After two more days of silence, I decided that perhaps the problem is with Deep Red's communication systems. I ran a full spectrum diagnostic on Deep Red's systems. No problems were detected. I suppose something could be wrong with central control, but I'm hardly qualified to even touch the AI.

Interestingly, one note did come up after I ran some more auto-diag. There may be an electrical short in one of the autonomic subsystems. I got behind the frame array and found the problem, but I don't think I have the right tools to fix it. The AI says that the short occurred when I was asleep. Apparently, many of Deep Red's systems went down and some are still down. The AI has no explanation for the outage. This is disturbing, to say the least.

Deep Red's systems are getting worse and worse. I barely have any diagnostics left. CyberDoc is dead. TriCalc is dead. Life support is still going, but is on subsistence power. It occurs to me that maybe Deep Red was hit by some sort of power surge. But from where? System logs show nothing, but this is a case where the logs might not be able to show anything. It depends on what systems got nuked first.

So maybe I'm not being left out of the loop, in the dark, so to speak. Maybe Houston is trying to message me and I can't respond. Maybe Attenborough Station has been trying to call and I can't answer. Maybe EROS has been trying to call...

What can I do?

June 29
I've just finished tearing apart all of the noncritical systems aboard Deep Red. I'm no electrical engineer, or cyber-engineer, for that matter, but NASA didn't send me to Deep Red for my looks and sparkling personality. I just figure things out. I don't really know how else to explain it. I'm good with gear and equipment. I find ways to make them work. It's something I've been doing since I was a kid. It set me apart from the other girls, I suppose, but it's not something that really ever bothered me. While my peers were spending time at the mall or friending each other on the SocNets, I was tinkering around with smart phones and cybers, breaking things down and trying to figure out how they worked. Heck, how I didn't end up an engineer of some kind is a mystery, indeed.

CyberDoc is definitely fried. The fact that it's tied directly to the life support system makes me think that it too was damaged in the "power surge", but I find no evidence of that. That means, however, no more checkups and no more diagnostics on my systems. I suppose I can "self-diagnose" until help arrives... if it ever does. TriCalc is down too, but that's not much of a problem considering the state of the station's sensor arrays. The AI, aside from CyberDoc and TriCalc, seems to be intact. It's not talking, but Deep Red's AI always was a strong, silent type. The AI responds when I ask it questions, but doesn't offer any suggestions. Piece of junk.

Comm is still down. I've checked the internal wiring and, while there is some fraying from normal use, I don't see any major damage that would explain a systemic outage.

Whatever this "power surge" was, Deep Red definitely took some major hits. I am unable to account for the source of this surge. My wild imagination leads me to think that it somehow came from the planet, but how? EROS hasn't jumped back into orbit, but, not knowing their plans, the team could be down there for months... or longer.

It occurred to me that I might check out Chimera, still docked to Deep Red, to see what communication systems the shuttle might have. Not sure why I didn't think of this before! This was a great idea, but, unfortunately, they somehow sealed the airlock corridor connecting Deep Red and Chimera. Seven meters separate the station and the shuttle, but it's seven meters I can't quite cross right now.

I found a vacc suit and figured out how to power it without hooking it up to Deep Red's fried systems; thank God for spare batteries. But I don't know how long the suit's systems will last on battery power. This is a really old model, older than the ones I trained with at NASA. I wish I could contact Houston and get some tips on what to do with this thing.

Getting into the airlock from my side won't be a problem; even without power, there is a manual override that will release the door. Now, the challenge will be to cross the divide and somehow break through Chimera's door.
