Okay, I got another winner for y'all. Like Pandemic? Check out Defenders of the Realm! Very similar mechanics to Pandemic but this time there are heroes, dragons, undead, orcs and all the fantasy cliches in there. Battles, healing the taint of the land, cooperative play, becoming a Slayer ... all is excellent. Plus: Larry Elmore did all the art.



It's a tad pricey @ around $60 but it's a winner. There is also a dragons expansion with more heroes, cards and such.

Looks shiny! Any details on how it plays?

It's about a 2 hour game. There are 4 different loss conditions and only one victory condition. Each game is different depending on how the cards come out. The goal for the heroes is to defeat all 4 enemy generals so they must do that before either the city is overrun by minons, invaded by a general, the land is overcome with taint or if there are too many minions in the realm. One game could have a good mix of all 4 but usually the threat of 2 is hovering (taint growing too strong plus too many minions) all the time. The generals are always advancing towards the city and it's very rare that at least one won't get to the gates at some point where panic starts to set in.

Thanks for the synopsis. You said that it was a cooperative game in your original post; how does that work?

And what role do the cards play?

Yep. This one's on my shopping list for a while now. Gonna get it eventually.

Cooperative just means you play together against the game itself. There are growing threats all over the board, which your heroes will have to face, and you need to cooperate, in order to best them and to work in several places at once.
