Demi-lich questions.

Flexor the Mighty!

18/100 Strength!
Do demiliches have full spell casting capabilities as they did when they were liches? I don't know if the Demi-lich has been covered in 3e yet, hopefully that lame thing in the updated TOH isn't what a demilich is supposed to be now.

The demi-lich is in the ELH. It is very nasty -- maybe moreso than in previous editions. IIRC, it is implied that the soul retains a significant awareness of the shell, now (that's a big change). Because of that, I would say the demi-lich probably has its spells.

Unfortunately, I don't have my books and that isn't exactly a critter I whip out every session. I hope I'm not steering you too wrong.

Edit: apparently, my memory is slower than the intarweb.

Dude, just posted a link to it.

What I was never clear on is if the phylactery still works for a demilich the way it does for a normal lich. That is, if you destroy the demilich's skull, does a new skull form in a few days, none the worse for wear, so long as the phylactery is okay?

They have the phylactery and the the soul gems. All must be destroyed to destroy the demilich. Items next to the phylactery are considered worn by the lich. If the phylactery is destroyed, it cannot use items in such a way but will regenerate as normal so long as the soul gems are not also destroyed. If the phylactery (or destoryed soul gems) could be recreated would be up to the DM I suppose but I doubt it or the soul gems would regenerate.

That's my read on it anyway.

A destroyed phylactery cannot be recreated, nor can a lich make a new one. That was laid down in Libris Mortis. I'd be willing to bet it's the same for soul gems, though I admit the demilich entry doesn't explicitly state that.

And in hindsight, the demilich entry makes it clear that the phylactery functions as normal for a demilich. My bad. :o A better question is, if you throw a Mordenkainen's Disjunction at an active demilich, does it have a chance to disjoin the soul gems? They are created magic items set into the demilich, after all.

I'd say no because of the Demilich's Magic Immunity. If the DM ruled that you managed to pry one out or had them separate after the demi-lich was destoryed, then I'd say yes.
