Odd. It hasn't been all that long since the 3.x version of the same book.

Going to be interesting to see how it compares (and those are big shoes to fill), and how much is entirely new for 4e's pseudo-setting, and how much reference there will be for stuff from prior editions (and how faithful the 4e versions compare).

I don't think it's odd at all. What monster types are perennial player favorites?!?! Dragons and Demons!!! Well, dragons and fiends of all sorts!

You are right, however, that the most recent demon books were pretty awesome!

I was a bit surprised that 'Planes Below' didn't have more on the abyss/demons. I guess this book will fill that gap. It'll probably be mostly an update on the 3e version.

I don't think it will be an update of the 3e version per say. After all, they probably won't spend much time on Orcus, Demogorgon, Graz'zt or Lolth, given that they are in MM1, MM2, MOP, and MM3 respectively.

Part of the reason was this book, yes. But another part is that the Elemental Chaos proper is a much newer--and, let's be honest, sometimes hard to envision--concept than the Abyss itself. We wanted to focus Plane Below on what made the Elemental Chaos, well, the Elemental Chaos. (Though certainly is material on the Abyss in there.) While I don't know of anything specific, there's no doubt in my mind that future books will continue to expand on demons and the Abyss to a greater degree than PB did. :)
