Because they were previously lumped with dwarves; just like duergars. (Or like drow were lumped with elves.)

In 3.5, they decided they would not be true dwarves anymore. But they forgot they would not have an illo anymore by this little move.

Of course, they also decided to give a picture for the drow.

IIRC, derro look very different from other dwarves. :)

Exactly, Boz! I am not sure, because I borrowed that book a few times but it's not mine, but I don't think they get a picture even in the FRCS. Was it so expensive for WotC to provide a picture for every creature just as they said they would have a couple of months before the revision? Couldn't they slip/recycle the FRCS pictures of subraces into the MM?

Yes I know it's a very MINOR thing, but it makes me angry because it's so minor that I don't see why it wasn't done. And I am sure that WotC advertised that "now every creature in the 3.5 MM gets its picture". It's one of the few kind of things that can cause a consumer's association to sue the company for advertising fraude. (Yes, I know it sounds exaggerating, and it is, but it is also quite true). :D

The psycho-looking dwarf with big white hair is a derro (the others are a svirneblin and a slyth, but I've no idea what slyth are exactly).
