Describe your FLGS

Lexington has a few small, but very good, FLGS's.

The one I prefer most is Collectibles Etc. There used to be two stores in this area called that, owned by a father-and-son duo, however, when Bill died, his son, Tony, closed the downtown one and instead runs the uptown one himself now (I liked the downtown one to). I've been going to Collectibles ever since they were in Southhill Station. They do quite well with comics, and their RPG material is always 10% off, with a moderately good selection, especially of new products. They do miss some stuff sometimes, but Tony and John are great guys, so this store remains where I get my comics.

Okay, I remember this place now. I went to UK for summer school back in '95? and got my comics there. They were quite nice. When'd they move? I was there sometime in January '96 and they weren't there any more. :( (Not that I go to Lexington any more...)

Cumberland MD, we have one small game store which is one more than we had six months ago. Die Monster games is a small store but is looking to expand. They carry all of WoTC stuff, plus Dragonlance, Wheel of Time, Ravenloft, and a large amount of Warhammer. It's great though I can go in and order almost anything and they know what i'm talking about, they are gamers, so they speak the language. Many times I tried ordering through the local bookstore chain, and would get blank stares from clueless employees or an I'm sorry we can't get that. Having a FLGS is great, no more driving sixty plus miles to find a FGLS which is what I had to do for the last several years.

Boardroom Games is the Northside store ran by a grumply but friendly guy once you get used to him. His daughter and another guy I know help him out.
And to an earlier poster's entry about Jerry not taking CC: when was this? Jerry has always taken CCs and will keep taking them. As for him yelling at kids, he does have some displays out on the floor that are kinda $$ so he ask for folks not to lean on them.

He's made kids cry over that stuff. He's /screamed/ at them. I admit now in his later years he's mellowed out, but he used to be a bonified jerk. I find it unlikely that it's all gone. And as far as Credit Cards, he would do it to people at random just to be a jerk. I didn't say HE didn't take CC's. I said that he did, but harassed certain people who tried to pay with them.

Woah. Here I was about to write about the FLGS in my hometown in GA, and lo-and-behold someone has already written about it! Astounding!

Only one thing to add: it has the most oddly constructed parking lot ever. Just in case you're planning to visit it, be forewarned.

The Game Closet, Waco TX

On Sanger Ave just off Lake Air Dr. A really nice store and large, as game shops go. John and DeQuan are the owners; John is into the RPGs and Q is into the CCG's, so one or the other knows just about everything on product. The nicest thing about the store is the space. They have a good sized display area in front, where they have some comic stuff, a bit of collectibles, some boardgames and puzzles (about 1 shelf unit of each), snack and soda machines, about 4 racks of minis, paints and related stuff, and 4 shelf units of RPG. Probably 2 and a half of them are d20. They mostly carry the big name publisher stuff, but a smattering of other stuff appears; they frequently order based on customer requests, and do very quick special orders.

They run CCG events on a weekly basis, in the big game room (6-8 tables) to one side in back, but what I love are the four small rooms on the other side for RPG's. Having a room with a door is a really nice feature. And there are usually 2-3 games going on on any given Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Thursday nights are "board game night".

All the staff is very friendly, knows their stuff, and knows their customers by name. Strong recommendation to drop by!

A+ Comics and Collectibles is where I go to get my RPG books. ...

How can you forget the Rusty Scabbard, Alz?
(btw, on the off chance I know you, this is Thomas in Frankfort)

The scabbard is just the right size & rather quaint, and for those in the area it's in Garden Springs Shopping Center off Lane Allen road. They carry a bit of everything, lots o' Dice and books of every sort, d20 allthe way back to Traveller and aroudn to hero & grups stuff.

The owner is a good guy, kinda large, who's participated in several fan films and now is working on writing some indie films. Other employees include a woman with good taste in movies, and a tall guy with a beard who's very ... umm, well, he's cool, but in a bland kinda way (no offense, if he sees this).

They have lots of tables & game days and whatnot, tho I've never attended..

[edit] LOL wingsandsword beat me...good to see the central KY guys have this place covered... I guess KY is a good state for gaming!

Been shopping at the BoardRoom for over 12 now and I have never seen Jerry scream at kids. He has raised his voice but never screamed at anyone. As for him hasrassing folks, he does it all the time to the regaulars. If he was not giving me a hard time once in a while, I will be worried.

Lexington, KY also has a third FLGS, The Rusty Scabbard. A fairly large store out on Harrodsburg Road.

Wow, egg on my face. I honestly thought that place had closed its doors! I looked in a phonebook recently, and couldn't find an entry for them (Lexington residents get several phonebooks every year, so in hindsight it makes sense that somehow some stores get omitted from a few), so I figured they had went the way of Red Rock Collectibles (anyone remember them?)

Good to hear the guys at the Scabbard are still around though. I should drop in sometime.

As an aside, I notice no one has mentioned either The Comic Interlude (since that doesn't seem to do anything RPG-related), or the brand new Plan B Collectibles store. Has anyone tried that out yet?

A brief history of Collectibles Etc. in Lexington. There were originally two stores with that name, working in tandem. From the little I know, Bill and Tony (father and son) ran them, with Bill working the one just off of Richmond Road, and Tony working the one downtown in Southhill Station (under LaserQuest; this is where the downtown Collectibles was originally). Quite a few years ago (not sure when exactly), Tony moved his Collectibles over to the corner of S. Limestone and Euclid, where it was above Tolly Ho, so as to have greater space (and, I think, exposure).

Things were quiet for a few years, then Bill's lung cancer began to get worse. In late 2002, he passed away. Tony, having known of his Dad's lung cancer, made a plan to close the downtown location, which he did around December 2002, and took over operating the uptown location that Bill had run. However, the "Collectibles Etc." sign at the S. Limestone and Euclid location, as well as a few remaining anime wall scrolls, remained there for almost a year. This resulted in some confusion among the Lexington populace; as it turned out, the group that bought that location (whoever they were) couldn't get their act together, and after several months, a record store (who's name escapes me at the moment) bought the location, and has finally removed the sign (at least, I'm pretty sure it has).

The only Collectibles in Lexington now is the one just off of Richmond Road (I think that street is N. Locust Hill Dr...or something like that anyway).

Thanks, but I don't think we know each other in real life, since I haven't been to Frankfort since I was a kid. This is Shane in Lexington on the slim chance that you know me even though I don't know you.

Simple: You can find it at the Hairy T at a reasonable price.

And that's why its my FLGS.

And right now 20-25% (19+1d6%) off d20 stuff.

It it helps that the chick that works there isn't very bright, got Urban Arcana for like 20$ off because she punched it in the calculator wrong (that's how they figure out sale prices).

Then you haven't been around him when he's in rare form. Suffice to say, I've seen the ugly side of him.
