Describe your FLGS

My FLGS? Doesn't exist.

The closest one is Heroes and Dragons, in Columbia, SC that Hand of Evil mentioned; the next closest (assuming they still exist) is Silver City. Prior to the year 2000, they were the best games store I ever saw, IMO.

Silver City changed owners/staff and has never been the same, very few game stuff anymore, mostly just comic and collectable toys. :\

When did the Green Dragon close?

The Hairy T has a large number of employees. My expectation is that the "he" you refer to was not the owner but a part timer filling in on the day you were there.

That's possible. I only popped in one weekend out of every two months while going to school in Waterloo, so I didn't get to know the staff too well. Some of my opinions are colored by my friend who used to live in Toronto (and frequented the Hairy T regularly).

Simple: You can find it at the Hairy T at a reasonable price.

I'll have to call foul there. Sure, some of their stuff is reasonably priced, but too much is definitely not. Firsthand story of my friends and I buying a couple of commons for a CCG, the store owner (or at least, someone in a position to change prices) discovering he's now all out of them, and then deciding that they must be high in demand and raising their price to around $1-2 instead of the 10 cents we got them for. For commons.

And honestly, barring during sales and for some rare collectibles, I've never seen anything at the Hairy T that I couldn't find cheaper at some other game store.

But to be fair, this was about 2 years ago, and towards the end of that time the place was starting to improve (but I left Ontario, so I haven't been there since).

Corpus Christi, TX, a biggish city full of small minds; I appoligize to anyone who's visited and though Corpus is a nice city, but I'm very cynical these days about my home town.

Anyways, Corpus's got a single lone gaming store, Armchair Commander. It's a good store overall, the staff knows the material and they keep plenty of it on hand, and have a gaming area in a back room of the store that stays open till the last person is ready to leave (they've been known to stay open 'til 5 or 6 in the morning). Armchair Commander's prices are at or above cost, partially because shipping to Corpus for some reason is so difficult (though I can't fathom why). My biggest beef is with the clientel, as have a disscussion with just about anyone on their gaming experiences and you'll always hear about how thier character single-handly took out the entire army of the Kingdom of Uber-beings with nothing but his armor of godhood and his trusty canon of world explosions at level 1. Add to that the hordes of card gamers under the age of 10 that frequent the store and play in the back (when I go there I always have to watch where I'm stepping as I've actually stepped on a kid there, not on purpose of course). But as I said they do have a very good selection of material and the staff are very knowledgable, so I have no problems with the store itself.

Been shopping at the BoardRoom for over 12 now and I have never seen Jerry scream at kids. He has raised his voice but never screamed at anyone. As for him hasrassing folks, he does it all the time to the regaulars. If he was not giving me a hard time once in a while, I will be worried.
Then you haven't been around him when he's in rare form. Suffice to say, I've seen the ugly side of him.
Are we talking about the same guy?

Hairy T is a hardcore RPG shop that sells CCG *packs*. 401 is a CCG shop that sells CCG singles aggressively that also sells mainstream RPGs.

"You don't go to Sony if you want RCA".

Conversely, if you were looking for Necromancer stuff - you wouldn't be looking for it at 401.

About the only one that is truly a "dual purpose" shop in terms of massive selection of RPGs and still has a very knoweldegable staff and selction singles in CCGs is the main branch of the Comic Book Warehouse.

I don't expect the experience is much different in other large cities. Shops tend to specialize in one or the other.

I've been shopping there 10. And he treats certain people oine way others anouther. You must be wearing blinders, or be on his good side. I've seen people drop 200 bucks att atime there, and he gives them crap. Needless to say, it's the reason the doofi at Game preserve get a ton more bussiness. Jerry doesn't know how to treat people.

London England

Apart from Leisure Games and Orc's Nest which have already been mentioned there is Leisure Games in Museum Street (about 100 yds from the British Museum). upstairs is mainly family games with lots of sets of fancy chess pieces (which I suspect make quite a lot of money from the tourist trade), downstairs is roleplaying, CCG, jigsaws and some more family games.

Pretty friendly place and not everything is covered in shrinkwrap the way it is at Orc's Nest.

A long time back there used to be this place in Hammersmith, but that was before GW became the evil empire...

While there are a few comics stores there are mainly 2 game stores in Birmingham AL:

Nord's: At the Galleria in Hoover. One of a small national chain that features Reaper Minis, of which they have the whole catalog. They also carry a wide selection of D20, GURPS, WoD, and a few other RPG books. They carry board games as well, and a few card games. The main problem is that its a) in the mall and b) since its a chain the manager doesn't seem to have lots of control over his stock.

Our main supplier however, is:
Legion, formerly Empire Comics: which actually has 3 stores in a small store front, one for comics, one for animie, and one for games.

The game store is practically quentisential, questionable lighting, clutered, and kinda dirty. But Paul has been making improvements. This where we pick up most of our new stuff and magazines, as well as the ever present comic addiction. It has an extensive out of print game selection, but sometimes its hard to find things. Still, go once or twice a week. Its a big WoD place, with a ton of LARPers on weekends.

The old Lion and the Unicorn is no more, but has kind of merged with the Baseballcard Shop and still has some CCGs and comics, but no RPG material.

Kingdom Comics has mostly WizKids Touranaments, HeroClix, MechWarrior, and Pirates but no RPG. However, Stan will order almost anything for you.

My wife and I tend to hit all of these in the course of a month, Legion several times.

OH, there is a Hobby Town that carries some minis and has a few RPGs, but thats not their focus. Other than that its BAM.

PS have heard that a large game store called Crimson Castle has opened in Tuscaloosa recently, but know nothing more of it.
