Descriptions of planes?

What books should I look for that give good descriptions of what it is like on other planes? Specifically I want to know what it looks, sounds, and smells like to be on other worldly planes.

You can find some of that in the Manual of the Planes. If you want something more poetic, you'll probably need to go for literature rather than game books; for instance, if your PCs are about to assault the Nine Hells, it'd be a good idea to read Dante's Inferno.
