So I was reading the threads and I saw a thread about iconic monsters in the last few monster books. This got me thinking what are everybody's desert island monsters. let's say you could only use five different monsters which would you pick? have fun :o

1. Cyclops.
2. Minotaur.
3. Tyrannosaurus (Jurassic Park anyone?).
4. Giant Crab (Mysterious Island).
5. Anything with the Gargantuan template (MM2).

1. Gilligan
2. Gaint Crab - standard
3. Memic - look drift wood, a chest...
4. Guardian beast - Kong, Zilla, gaint octopus, etc...
5. Plant monster

If you mean, a campaign could only have five monsters in it, and I had to pick, I'd say:

1. Dire animals (dire rats specifically)
2. Orcs
3. Giants (hill giants, I guess)
4. Dragons (the classic red)
5. Pixies (fey in general if I could squeeze it out to that broad an interpretation)

I could run a low-to-mid level campaign with just those critters if absolutely necessary. And lots of humans and demi-humans, of course.

Lets see, I don't know about a desert island, but on a deserted island

1. Kobolds or Orcs (depends on the theme I'm using*)
2. Dinosaurs (especially deinonychus, mounts for the above mentioned race)
3. Killer plants (assassin vines make excellent encounters)
4. Dragon (probably red, as a kind of guardian monster)
5. Marilith (perfect for one of the above(1) mentioned races to follow/worship)

*If its a lost world theme the kobold makes more sense. If its a pirate isle theme, I'd take the orcs.

I ran a desert island in which the PCs had to escape from the center of the monster infested land

1. Dinosaurs (with various templates)
2. Crab-man
3. Giant Crabs
4. Magmin (sort of)
5. Canibalistic Sprites

and does a malicious erupting volcano count?

Desert island = deserted island or island with desert on it?

Deserted island. This is a take off on similar things such as the "Desert Island Discs" section in Tower Records's Pulse magazine, in which people list off the 10 albums that they'd want to have with them if stranded on a desert island.

As for the monsters...
1. humans
2. orcs
3. demons
4. dragons
5. devils... or some other type of fiendish outsider.
