design a prison

OK, a forgotten race built a prison to house an ancient evil. Said evil cannot be destroyed, only contained. The ancient evil critters dislike water, and will try to avoid it (no this isn't a Signs ripoff or anything). What kind of unique barriers/traps/etc. would be in the prison. For instance, I thought of vertical doors made from water (magical of course). Thanks for the brainstorming!

Small Waterfalls -- like a magic water door, but not magical.

Sprinkler System -- imagine what kind of fear that would create! Could be an "emergency defense" type of thing.

And for the "isolation rooms":

Diving Bells -- Don't pull that chain!

-- Nifft

What if the walls/floors were made of ice? With ice paraelemental creatures and snow/ice golems as guards and summoned minions?
Water sprays, moats, flooding room traps...or maybe 90% of the prison is just constantly flooded in 3 inches of running water, therefore slick and easy to fall upon. (Season to taste with electrical spells and aquatic predators. Dire electric eels give you the best of both worlds there...)

Hrmmm

So ice is out...pity.

One thing you'll need to be aware is is that particularly in a subtropical environment, you will likely get mosquitos and algae in stagnant water...at least, if you're being realistic.
You may want some sort of current, probably through a gravity feed system, to keep that down.
There will likely either need to be either a recirculating pump/system (for a closed system prison) or a decanter of everfull water (for an open system prison, which will wind up creating its own watercourse at the drain outlet, particularly if it's been left on for a millenium or two).

Depending on how high-magic and divergent you want to get with the definition of prison, it's entirely possible the spirits were just sealed into glassteel cubes, chucked into the deepest part of the ocean, and checked on periodically with clairvoyance and darkvision or truesight. Maybe some druids with a sea orientation went down to encourage the coral around the cubes to grow faster, plant some toxic dire sea anenomes on top of it, and chum for sharks.

If you are going to go that far why not plane shift the lot in to the elemental plane of water.

If there is more than one nasty, make sure they are well scattered around so if one does get out it going to have trouble releasing the others.

Oh and because I'm mean make sure the cubes are FULL of water :D

You could have rooms with magically created Icy areas

Such as the ship from Voyager which had a tropical room, a desert room, a Antartic room

Also you could have a room with the illusion of a large cliff unclimable cliff face (so that they can see the world but are unable to get out of the dungeon in which they reside)

Incidently I would like suggestions for remaking the Chateau D'If for my world.
