I was going to go for a total of four gods for my next campaign. They were not to be worshipped much by humans et al, because they are mostly malign and strange entities. Now I am envisioning them to be more like demonic overseers who came to power when the world ended (read: the previous party failed in Expedition to the Demonweb Pits). After a long period of darkness, a time of change is at hand, and new/old gods (the core 4E deities) are gaining a foothold again.
Still got a few weeks to decide if I'm going to stick with that, but I'm quite liking the idea at the moment.
To elaborate on the how those four came to be: unlike the the deities in the previous campaign, i took a very mechanical approach at the beginning, dividing up the core domains. Then, I thought about how those gods may be perceived by mortals. Amongst them was the androgynous Shihm, who had the domains of chaos, death, evil, healing, good, and law. Some would view him/her as simply mad, others as the perfect embodiment of balance, and still others who believe in things like reincarnation (or for something more planescape-ish, the unity of rings), might also come to revere him/her.
cheers
