I remember reading an article by Poul Anderson wear members of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) made some chainmail with coat hanger wire. He said that they could hack at it with sword blades all day and night and never cut through the links. A hard driven spike (pick or claw hammer) might penetrate, but apparently a sword just about never went through armour, not while slashing.

The problem is IIRC the the right article Thieves wOrld , the thing is it hang free and could the input take with.
This isn`t the same as wearing mail, the underpadding(right word isn`t known) and standing in cmbat.
OTOH the proetection quality of the padding is it seems to me often strong underestimated.
As Prof Junkelmann pointed out that the mail didn#`t take damage, didn`t mean the body didn`t take damage.
The blade may hadnot cut but if your ribs or arm is broken?

One thing to keep in mind is that the term "longsword" is the proper term for what D&D calls a bastard sword.
