Detect Magic and Invisibility (again old problem)

First Post
One of the oldest D&D problems. Is it possible to see Invisibility (indirect) with detect magic? What are the present rules concerning this problem? Does one see a magic aura somewhere?

Is it possible to detect the lingering aura of magic items the target wears, even if the target is invisible?

Are there any skills or skillchecks which allow to detect invisibly targets (or get aware of them)

Thanks.

detect magic is a possible (but not very efficient) way to detect invisible creatures. You can't dicern the location of a magical aura (faint Illusion, in this case) until the 3rd round, and a creature could have moved by then, possibly away from the area you're concentrating on.

Well, let's break it down. 1st round you get if there are any auras. Since a functioning spell (like invisibility) has one, even without items you could get that there is "some magic" in the area. 2nd round will give you number of auras and strength of the most powerful. 3rd round is the biggie - location (and strength) of each aura.

The downsides. First, they still have total concealment (50% m,iss chance, no precision damage, etc.) Second, that assumes that they stay within your 60' cone. They move to a new area and you've got to start the 3 round again.

So, it's useful for finding the invisible doodad, but fairly easily overcome by any mobile opponent because of the length of time needed and the limited area.

Hope this is helpful.

Cheers,
