Detect Magic vs Magic Jar

Hi,

If I cast Detect Magic near the posseded body of a Magic Jar spell, do I detect a Necromancy aura ?

Same thing on the gem (the Magic Jar) ?

I would say that both the body (Target) and the gem (Focus) radiate a Necromancy aura. The exact definition of "magical aura" so we have to make our own decision. I can't see a case where the Target does not detect as magical, but you could perhaps decide that the focus doesn't (the magic passes through it, uses it, but does not remain inside it).

Easily only so far as someone having detect magic running for three rounds. Now, arcane sight is another matter. I suggest using magic aura to hide the gem though. There should be a magic aura spell for creatures, so maybe you could consider making one. Maybe 3rd level?

In the "Epic spin off campaign" of the one I described in the "Psion" topic I got a big problem with permanent detect magic or arcane sight.

These characters (around level 20) carry so many powerful magic items that they are "easily" identifies them as "powerful beings". The strange thing is that it's far more easier to hide an alignement aura (using a cheap Ring of Mind Shielding) than an magical one.

That's why I suggested magic aura. That would hide them.

As for permanent spells, a handful of nasty dispels of various flavors would eliminate a lot of that. Targeted (or even area) dispel magic/greater dispel magic, reaving dispel, disjunction, etc. Use a BBEG contemplative with the inquisition domain.

Magic aura is interesting, but you need one for each item !

True, but they last for a long while. Keep in mind that many items will be stored in container items like a haversack, and only the haversack will need the spell. If it's really necessary to hide certain items, like the gem in this example, then it's worth the cost. Even just have a wand of magic aura is helpful, especially at this level where a 1st-level wand is pocketchange. Heck, create the wand at maybe 3rd level and it's still dirt cheap.

At which level would you put this ?

Magic Aura, Greater
Illusion (Glamer)
Level: Sor/Wiz ?
Components: V, S, F
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: One touched object / level (weighing up to 5 lb./level)
Duration: One day/level (D)
Saving Throw: None; see text
Spell Resistance: No

Same as Magic Aura.
