"Detect" spells blocked by walls?

I've seen it be a pretty common practice to use Detect Evil on every door to see if anything nasty is lurking on the other side. But since the range of this spell is a "Quarter circle emanating from the character to the extreme of the range", isn't it blocked by anything that stops a normal line-of-effect?

Bah, nevermind, I found the answer in the SRD:

The spell can penetrate barriers, but 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt blocks it

Wish the "delete" function actually worked...
