Well, that's even better then.
Of course, I haven't had to make a death save yet. We're cutting our way through Keep on the Shadowfell at the moment (yeah... we're getting to it rather late; we've had other campaigns to play up until now), and it's all going very well. After 7 combat encounters, including some kind of giant blue ooze, not one of our PCs had hit zero hp.
In addition to the deva avenger, we've got a goliath warden, half-elf bard, drow rogue, and dwarven cleric. I seem to be getting the same sort of experience I've seen reported elsewhere on EN World: the rogue hits for more raw damage, but the avenger seems to be doing more damage over time (due to "never" missing).
Other observations:

Other observations:
- Aspect of Might [Avenger daily] rocks hard. First use was a crit with a greataxe. 40+d12 damage, +2 Speed, +5 Athletics, +2 Damage for the rest of the encounter.
- Avenging Echos (Avenger encounter) rocks even harder. Fire it up and run around provoking as many AoO as possible.
- The warden was the perfect defender, and probably the group MVP. The group marking ability was fantastic.
- I love the bard. Until 4e, I had no idea you could mock an ochre jelly to death. "Hey, slime! You're ugly, and your gelatinous cube dresses you funny!"
