As much as I hope this is a huge success, fantasy comics just don't sell very well (with the exception of Conan) compared to other popular comics. The D&D brand comics that Kenzer produced did okay from what I heard, but not stellar numbers that were hoped for/expected. I guess I'll just wait till they come out and see for myself, but I am skeptical regarding their chances of success.

Hmm. The 'younger audience' abandoned comics for video games years ago. The most recent Diamond survey I'm aware of puts the average comics reader age at 34.

34 is still young.

diaglo "no longer young" Ooi

Fantasy comics have been around for a long time.

I don't see this bringing new players to the fold.

Bringing visual life and perhaps a nice condensing of angst fill dark elves yes.

New, younger players by virtue of comic format alone? No.

why aren't they starting with the real first book in the series?

why are they using the prequel books?

Simple - in Icewind Dale, Drizzt was still the sidekick. In the Prequels, he's the main character from the get go.

I don't think its an issue of munckin hacks so much as simple marketing - Drizzt has driven sales of a freakin' ton of books. To do Icewind Dale (which is more a coming of age tale and ensemble piece) first just does't make good business sense if they want to make their first one a big hit.
