[Devil’s Workshop] Mechanized Armor of Pulp Destruction released plus a Bonus…

Does this mean the zone rules are now open?

I ask because I'm interested in the zone rules.

They look an awful lot like hazards (Dungeoncraft, FFG, author Mike Mearls) to me.

They also seem to rely pretty heavily on (ie, derive from) OGC from the SRD (DCs, skill checks, attacks, saves, etc.) so that seems to make them pretty clearly open IMO.

Unless the contention is that the word "zone" is somehow PI.

I dunno. Never could figure out how Monte reads and implements the OGL.

I won't deny that they look like they're based on existing OGC but the OGC declaration in Mastering Iron Heroes doesn't come close to touching the zone rules.

If they are open I think I could be inspired to write my first new 101 in almost two years. :)

This might not be the best time or place to bring it up, but...

Isn't "d20 Future" a trademark of Wizards of the Coast? Also, isn't it a trademark that the d20 System Trademark License does not allow the use of? To the best of my knowledge, the d20 STL only allowed the use of the terms "Player's Handbook" and "d20 Modern" when it came to stating compatibility or requirement.

If so, a lot of Devil's Workshop's "Weapons of ______ Destruction" are in violation of the d20 STL. I sincerely hope I'm wrong about this.

You are not wrong at all. Nowhere in the D20 STL does it give permission to use "D20 Future." In fact, I was interested in this enough that I called WotC and talked with Charles Ryan about it. He said that they had no plans to open the "D20 Future" trademark for use.

Many publishers use this trademark. I've even told several of them that its use is not allowed. I guess until WotC steps in and puts an end to it blatant, willful violations will continue.

Actually we use this phrase: "futuristic d20 Modern RPG" and we have changed all of our future material to the "Polymecha".

My copy of your newest Weapons of Starship . . . says "Requires the use of the D20 Future . . . " which is improper usage.

I don't own any of those lines so you'll have to inform me as to how it's listed. Does it say "d20 Future" on the cover or in the text of the PDF?

EDIT: never mind. Phil's post answered that.

What's worse, besides using the trademark, is that the way it is used rewrites a legal disclaimer given to publishers by WotC. That's dangerous ground.

Well, the first page top border also reads "D20 FUTURE" in bright green letters. I've seen this on Weapons of Mecha Destruction 1 & 2, and Weapons of Power Armor Destruction 1-4. Not sure where that stands either.

We updated those PDF files and images on RPGNow.com last week. Click refresh on the web page and they should appear with the new changed Polymecha titles.
