Did your group have only one DM?

I've heard the claim that the norm in 1e days was for a group to have only 1 DM and for the players to be ignorant of what was between the covers of the DMG. This is completely opposite of my experience, so, I'm wondering which was the norm. At least of EN World gamers.

So, here's the question, did your 1e group consist of only 1 DM (either Dming or playing)?

SIgh, this was supposed to be a poll, but, EN World is giving me problems. I'll try again methinks.

Yes; I'm almost always the DM. I did have one player that DM'd a short-lived 1E campaign, but that's it -- most of them stuck to playing.

One GM? Nope. My 1E and 3E groups have been just the opposite - almost everyone GM'd at one time or another. We rotated GM's all the time.

In our groups, everyone took turns - it's where I got the practice, and where I got my belief that everyone taking at least one turn DM'ing makes everyone both better DMs as well as better players.

There were DMs who were obviously better at it than others, and we tended to play under them more often, but everyone did get a turn if they had an idea waiting to get out. :)

15 years of AD&D1 gaming: I DMed most of the time, but I was not the only one ever. I played a character, too, sometimes. And even when I was the DM, the Players were not ignorant of the rules (at least not because they were "mere" Players).

Yes, mostly.

I was the DM for my 1e group. Whenever I was sick or otherwise busy a friend took up the reins. Only got to play in his game once, he was pretty good. He didn't want to run if I was available, which was flattering but it meant I seldom played. The other players would sometimes talk about some strategy involving NPCs that I had never heard of. Kind of a bummer as it sounded like they had fun.

I have players who have DMed in the past and run good games I had fun playing in, but these days I am the only one able to consistently run a game not have it die out - I'd say for the last 7 years or so.

Note, I'm not asking that you were the only one who DM'd in your group. I'm asking, of the people sitting around the table, was there only one person who ever DM'd. So far, we're at 0% for that.

I think a poll is in order.
