Different base stats for skills.

Aah well, just another thinghy I noticed, I use Ag as base stat for the climbing skill.

One simple reason : I climb....:D

For those amongst you who are not climbers: it's gotta do with agility and technique, not with strength. If you doubt it, ask yourself who'd be first up a mountaincliff : the world champion weight lifting (superheavy class) or the world champion gymnastics?

In game this will give another advantage to dex-based rogues, but hey, that's life...

Anybody else using different stats for different skills?

Any homebrew skills?

PS the answer to above question really is: the 80 yr old grandma in the ski-lift, but you can't win 'em all.

I have a friend who goes to this "climbing gym" alot; he took me on the "bring a bud" day. I had little problem going up the moderately difficult walls. However, by the third time I went up the wall, I was tapped out. My hands could barely support my own weight, let alone lift me up. Agility and technique were not the limiting factor.

Common problem, solved by using your legs to boost you up, not your arms, although i must admit you need "some" strength in your hands. Once you have that minimum strength, you don't become a better climber by doing push-ups or other muscvle-gaining excercises.

Totally agree, a good climber uses hand holds to "hold" themselves in place then steps up using his legs. Having said that I've seen some outstanding climbers do onehanded chinups on a overhang (on a gym climing wall) and another pop a tennis ball in one hand.

Naaah, they're just showoffs

any other stat - skill changes out there?

I think the designers must have thought since the start that climbing depends on both strength and dexterity, but probably they didn't want to complicate a single skill and wanted to have the same way all skills work (1 key ability only).

I guess it also depends on what you are climbing: I don't think to climb a rope needs much dexterity, only a (little) strength to push you up; climbing a tree with lots of branches might be done by swinging instead of lifting up, and in fact I have sometimes used Climb combined with Balance in similar cases.

Knowledge (Wisdom) just like Knowledge (Enterprise) -- trade -- and Knowledge (Governance) -- ruling, laws, etc. -- are based off Wis. The first one is due to the people who would commonly use it (clerics, druids) the second two is due to the fact that knowledge in these is not so much a collection of wisdom, but knowledge of the correct application of these concepts. Ie: knowing about Roe vs. Wade isn't enough, knowing its particular relevance to an abortion case is also required.

Perform is based on Dex. Art, Dance, Guitar isn't so much based on me being good looking/not shy but how quick and dextrously I can move my fingers/hand/feet.

Survival = Con for me. This one's a tossup. On one hand I can understand Wis guiding you towards the next watering hole or eatable fruit, but I think Knowledge: Nature does it. Survival should be your ability to, well, survive without water, food, etc.

Does anyone else think many of the Crafts should be Dex based?

That's actually how it works: Constitution governs all the checks to keep going without water, food, etc. Except that it is not part of the Survival skill. It is not so because it is intended to be a representation of physical resistance and not an activity, which Survival is for (looking for food and water in the forest, build an impromptu repair to sleep in the cold...). They are different things - an action and a reaction!

Perform should be based on CHA. You can be a great guitarist, but terrible to watch. I've seen plenty of those. Storytelling is by and large about the storyteller's presence. Personality is a huge factor in what makes a great performance, whether it be music, dance, or song. The more charismatic the performer, the more captivating and memorable the performance.
