What is Different Worlds?

Sorry that I'm so late to the party, but I just discovered the Different Worlds website last week and am a little confused. Is this a publishing company, or a reseller of out-of-print material? How is Rob Kuntz affiliated? What's the deal with the Judges Guild and Different Worlds stock? I thought Different Worlds was a Chaosium magazaine.

Hi Garnfellow---

Different Worlds has a long history: the magazine originated at Chaosium, where it was edited and produced by Tadashi Ehara. Tadashi kept it up for a few years after he left Chaosium, which is when he founded Different Worlds Productions. DWP shut down in 1987 when Tadashi left the gaming industry to work in the technology industry of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Tadashi relaunched DWP as a d20 publisher in 2004. He chose to work with Ryan Smalley from ENWorld because of Ryan's well-regarded Story Hour. I've known Rob Kuntz since 1987, and Rob was looking for a publisher for the fourth of his Maze of Zayene d20 modules (the first three were published by Necromancer Games); at the time, Tadashi sought additional authors to publish, and the rest is history :D

Tadashi also sells a lot of old games on eBay and via his web site, which is why the OOP Judges Guild, DW magazines, etc. materials are listed and available.

Any other questions?
