dire bunny as a ranger animal companion....

First Post
my elvish ranger is still first level. however. when she gets to the point where she can aquire a companion, i was considering a dire-rabbit. it would first start out as a cute regular baby bunny, but as it gets older, it would develope the dire bunny traits.... would that be unreasonable? probably have to work it out with da dm, but it would be fun to play......
*visions of minsc and boo.....

It's making me think of the Holy Grail film.... Killer Rabbits and all.

I think it's a good idea. Although, I think an alsatian sized 'vicious looking' rabbit is actually pretty scary.

Could get it some 'bunny barding' like the Donnie Darko rabbit?

If there are any Monty Python fans in your group, be ready for a LOT of such comments ("Death comes at you with big nasty pointy teeth!") and general silliness.

I wouldn't do it, simply because the reference is too obvious, and the versimilitude (aaaahahahaha I never thought I'd use that word) would be ruined (for my group and I). But whatever floats your boat.

I'm kind of surprise they haven't devised a "Dire" template, with all those Dire animals running around.

Generally, herbivores don't make the best 'dire' animals. To make a rabbit into a threatening creature, you're going to have to change the concept behind it so much that it will only match a rabbit in appearance, not 'performance'.

In other words, beyond the Monty Python jokes, be ready to either have a useless animal companion (perfectly fine in a high role playing game) or to hear a lot of "rabbits don't/can't do that!"

might be right. :D
i'll think of another animal.from what i understand, ranger companions aren't the bricks like their druidic counterparts. they're more like pets and helpers, much like a hunting dog is to a hunter.

whoot. but a giant bunny would be good for a gnome or other small to tiny character.

heh. mebbe i'll go for a blood-hound type companion. ... now that would be an excellent choice for a ranger.

i'm really just trying to figure out ideas for animal companions.

"Ohhh...Its just a li'l bunny rabbit."

I wouldnt do it either for the very same reason. Too many references to said movie. :)

There is a Dire template....its in the Tome of Horrors.

Guess you're right. I'll probably go for a basset or beagle type hound. Great to help out with the tracking and easy to carry as well.

hmm. what sort of companions do you use for your rangers? Normal animals, temperate woods/plains. I'm not looking for something to use as a combat aid, they get killed to quickly.
