Dire... really Dire...

There is a Dire Template in the Tome of Horrors. It lets you, you guessed it, take an animal and make it Dire.
It will not, however, recreate the dire animals in the MM. Erica and I spent quite a while reverse-engineering the dire animals against their normal counterparts, and found..nothing. So, you can use the template to make a dire bear, dire rat, but it won't be an exact match to the one found in the MM.
Also- later on, subsequent talks with a few WotC (now ex-WotC) peeps, confirmed what we thought...the dires were simply converted from the previous edition and there is no template or pattern.
EDIT: Forgot. There is a 3.5 update to all the dire animals and the template in Tome, as well as several new dire animals, that will be appearing shortly on the Necromancer Games website (downloadable for free of course).
