Dirty Fighting

How does dirty fighting work? It says 1d4 damage when attacking but that seems a bit overpowered. Am I missing something here or what? One of my players wants to take it and I lent my copy of S&F out and don't recall the rules exactly.

You get the extra damage only when you take a full round action to do so. So, you only get one attack when you use this option, and you'll never be able to move more the 5ft without outside help (haste spell for instance).

An issue of Dragon Magazine does have a suggested Improved Dirty Fighting Feat that lets the player do an additional d4 damage for every +5 to BAB. You still only get one attack, but it's not bad for high level characters.

I've never had a PC stupid enough to take Dirty Fighting. However, at low levels i like to throw muggers with dirty fighting at em. They are only getting one attack anyway and that extra d4 can do some damage and make them more of a threat. Plus it adds nice flavor to the idea of mugging (no honor among thieves?) make the PC's feel nice :).

My group has house-ruled Dirty Fighting to allow the extra damage to apply to all attacks made while performing a full attack action.

So far, it hasn't seemed unbalanced, and we've been using it this way for about 6 months. YMMV, of course.

I thought this was erratta'd to allow for multiple attacks in a round....

Not really. Check out the DnD FAQ. Not only does it address Dirty Fighting, but the Improved Dirty Fighting is in there as well.

Out of curiosity, what are the prereqs on that modified version?
