Discworld d20?

I know GURPS did a supplement for the Discworld, but I was curious to know if there has been any attempt, online, fan-based or otherwise, to make a d20 version.

At some point on these boards (I think it was the recent "literary setting" thread) someone mentioned that SJGames owns the rights to the Discworld game setting. Pratchett wrote the setting book himself (well, co-wote anyway), so he probably signed some sort of agreement with SJG.

I've got a copy of the GURPS Discworld book, and I have to say I didn't like it. It made the classic mistake of trying to tie everything down to game rules, when some of the things that happened in the books aren't definable in that way. Any other gaming system would almost certainly fall into the same trap.

It was things like the increasing powers of Granny Weatherwax that really didn't add up - her ability not to get cut by a sword is not based on her 'casting a spell' beforehand. She is simply a very powerful witch who didn't have time to be cut then, and chose to be cut later instead. Not something that can be put into game terms easily.

In addition, the thought of powergamers and munchkins (I refer only to the people who do this relentlessly with no sense of the fun of role playing) getting to run around my favourite fantasy setting is not a good one.

I completely agree with you, Tallarn. All too often, the mistake is made trying to "translate" a book or fictional setting completely into game terms. While I applaud SJG for getting the author involved and I would never begrudge Pratchett a single penny that he can make off his creation, it does fall short in several places. It's not anyone's fault, it's just part of the problem of "porting" these things between mediums.

On a side note, Kidby's illustrations are the best I've ever seen when it comes to drawing exactly what the author has described. If you haven't already, get a hold of a copy of The Last Hero :D

PS - I understand a new book is due out this fall! I can't wait!

I agree that their powers are beyond simple game terms, although that said I think a system based on SJG's Voodoo could possibly work, at least for most things.

I tried to make up a witch class and had almost got it "down" until I read Wyrd Sisters and found out that they could bring an entire nation 15 years into the future...

Again, having said that, I don't think it's beyond possibility (after all, anything entirely improbable has to exist SOMEWHERE, much like million to one chances :D ).

I do think that, however, that it would have to be a predominantly RP based game with the powers of characters based more on what the DM thinks can and should happen, rather than a set amount of X per day or whatnot. I'd love to see at least some guidelines, if you're listening, Mr. Pratchett, pleeeeeaasse! :)
