disenchanted with D&D

I was suffering from burnout too. I had a great group of my clsest friends to play with, some of them loved to play, and we had fun. But i was the DM. We were playing the Wheel of Time rpg and because i am a dork and have read each book in the series about 5 times, they made me DM. I used to DM D&D 2nd ed all the time. It was how i started.

I dont like DMing. Some people tell me that I am good at it, but ultimatelty i feel confined by it. I was following the rules to the T. it was the only way I could see to keep the game fair. I am too rule bound to have fun while DMing. I started to hate rpgs.

Then i started playing with a different group. They were older than me, and i was a little uncomfortable the first game i played with them. Hell, one of the players was a proffesor of mine. I had fun. changing groups and my role in the group was fun.

I havent played with the WoT group lately. We have a game set up for the end of the month. I hope I can have fun with them again. Maybe someone else will DM for me, but if they dont I can always play with my DnD group. they make it fun. if i dont have fun with my WoT group then I can always say, "hey i get to hang out with my friends. thats whats fun."

Hey, what's up, Mahiro? Funny meeting you here.

I'm in the "older" group that Mahiro mentioned. Playing only once a month really helps with the burnout, but I also like to cajole my players into taking over the DMing once in a while so I have a chance to play. Then I come back refreshed!

pseudo_hero, I think you're doing the right thing by taking a DM-break and gaming with a different group. You could also try some different game systems (W.W.W.W.--White Wolf works wonders), or as other people mentioned, just stop playing for a while.

Mahiro...I'm sad to learn that you don't have fun DMing. You were my next choice to DM a one-shot along the way to the Silver Marches!

Wow, I haven't seen so much warm advice and empathy in a long time. Scary from a bunch of hack n slash gamers.

Go hike to the top of a mountain and sit there. Stare at ocean waves for a while. Watch some kids playing on a play ground.

Get a reset. Play D&D if it's fun. Walk away if it is not. I've DM'd for 20+ years, but mostly I have been a player. I have been fortunate to have had another DM to alternate with. But this group of friends does other things together too. BBQs, strategy gaming, paintball, etc. We have other lifes.

It needs to be fun for the DM too. Good luck dude.
